Gotta give credit where it’s deserved, so it’s hats off to James Gunn, the new co-head of the DCU who is currently filming his Superman movie starring David Corenswet.
Gunn was previously at Marvel where he did the three Guardians of the Galaxy movies and related Disney+ shows, and helped out on Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame.
However, following controversial tweets that resurfaced from right wingers, Disney shit-canned Gunn, and while Disney eventually rehired Gunn, it was too late — Gunn had signed on to the direct competition: DC.
My insiders who told me Gunn was leaving Marvel for DC filled me in that Warner Bros. loves Gunn and even that Gunn likes the DC characters better than Marvel.
We all know that following the Avengers: Endgame, the MCU took a nosedive, so what happened?
As I have written about previously, who developed the MCU? Jon Favreau, Joss Whedon, James Gunn, and the Russo brothers.
Well, guess what they all have in common? A love for comic books.
Who’s now developing the MCU? Producers who don’t want their writers to know a thing about comics, and they even tell their directors not to read comics. What a f’n joke. Kevin Feige also isn’t a comic book guy, he’s a film nerd.
James Gunn? He’s posting all the DC stuff on his social media: movies, comics, and even video games. When’s the last time you heard from Kevin Feige?
One of Gunn’s most recent posts, Gunn reveals he brought legendary comic book creator John Ostrander to the set of Superman. Gunn adapted Ostrander’s Suicide Squad and is using Mr. Terrific in Superman.
“27 years ago today the modern Mr. Terrific (Michael Holt) appeared for the first time in DC Comics,” Gunn posted on Instagram.
He continued, “In a wonderful coincidence this happened to fall on a day when his co-creator, my friend John Ostrander was visiting the Superman set! His co-creator was Tom Mandrake. Mr. Terrific is being played by @iamedigathegi in our film.”
Update: Gunn revealed he brought a lot more comic book creators to the set:
“Great day with some comic book titans visiting the #Superman set. So many of my heroes all at once it was really overwhelming,” he posted on Instagram. Front Row: Frank Quitely, me, Jim Lee. Middle Row: Angelo Exarhkios, Kevin Maguire, Carrie Williams, Scott Snyder, Josh Williamson, John Ostrander, Anne DePies. Back Row: Jerry Ordway, Christina Merkler, Cameron Merkler, Dan Jurgens, Jason Aaron.”
Gunn also did the same when he was filming Guardians of the Galaxy and brought to the set the comic book creators that in part inspired his MCU movies, Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning.
This is amid the head Marvel Comics people firing them off the book and placing themselves on the title because of the amount of recognition the movie would bring (and they’re the same Marvel Comics Creative Committee that butted heads with the movie people!).
Gunn also brought back Abnett and Lanning to do a separate Guardians of the Galaxy special while the MCCC people ruined the comics (fittingly enough, fans refer to the MCCC as ‘aholes’ — a nod from Gunn’s first GOTG).
The MCU? They’re replacing all their characters with characters no one gives a shit about and while doing so are shitting all over decades worth of legendary creators’ works that include Jack Kirby and Stan Lee. Of course, Feige and Marvel are also shitting all over the fans. How’s it working out?
James Gunn could be our best hope for quality comic book movies. It’s not Feige and Marvel, and it certainly isn’t Sony!
