WB Pushes James Gunn’s ‘Superman’ for Golden Globes as Oscar Favorite Emerges

Warner Bros. Discovery is doubling down on awards season for James Gunn’s Superman, and this time it’s going for prestige.

According to Variety, the studio has officially submitted the summer blockbuster in the drama categories at the Golden Globes, signaling it wants Gunn’s DC reboot viewed as more than just a superhero spectacle.

Golden Globes Drama Push

The submissions include Best Motion Picture (Drama), Best Actor (Drama) for David Corenswet, Best Supporting Actress for Rachel Brosnahan, and Best Supporting Actor for Nicholas Hoult.

Gunn himself is being pushed for Best Director and Best Screenplay, while the film’s original track, “The Mighty Crabjoy’s Theme” — written by Gunn, Eric Nally, and Devin Williams — is in contention for Best Original Song.

The movie also qualifies for the Outstanding Cinematic and Box Office Achievement category, which recognizes films that gross over $150 million worldwide. Superman is currently 2025’s third-highest domestic grosser, trailing only Disney’s Lilo & Stitch and Warner Bros.’ Minecraft movie.

The Golden Globe nominations will be announced on Dec. 8.

Early Oscar Buzz for Visual Effects

As Warner Bros. has launched the Oscars campaign, according to Variety, inside the Academy, Superman is already being talked about as an Oscar favorite for Best Visual Effects, led by Stéphane Ceretti, Enrico Damm, Stéphane Nazé, and Guy Williams.

The same team previously worked on Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. The film’s sound, makeup, and hairstyling teams — including Lee Orloff, David Acord, Katy Wood, Chris Boyes, Tim Leblanc, Alexei Dmitriew, Peter Swords King, and Shane Mahan — are also drawing attention from awards watchers, claims the outlet.

However, one notable omission looms: the original score by John Murphy and David Fleming is ineligible for Oscar consideration due to heavy references to John Williams’ 1978 Superman theme, which violates the Academy’s 35% originality rule.

DC’s Awards Track Record

Warner Bros. has found awards success with DC before. Joker (2019) won Best Actor and Best Score at the Golden Globes and went on to win both Oscars. Gunn’s Marvel films have also landed Oscar nominations for visual effects and makeup, including Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and Vol. 2.
