Netflix Not Picking Up Agent Carter: Here’s Why

With Marvel TV already having five series on Netflix (Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, Defenders), and with ABC recently cancelling Agent Carter, some have thought it a good idea that Agent Carter could be renewed over at Netflix.

Netflix chief content officer Ted Sarandos explained to EW.com why Agent Carter won’t be coming to their streaming service.

“We’re looking for truly original brands to own,” Sarandos said. “And in that Marvel space we already have [original comic book shows] – so that was mostly why.”

Sarandos also offered it’s about legal matters, such as distribution, than not liking the Agent Carter product.

“They also have some output deal complexities,” Sarando added. “So when you pick it up, being able to pick it up globally is difficult even after it’s canceled. Some of those output partners still had it on the air, so they would argue its covered by their output [deals]. Unfortunately, it was a business decision more than a creative one.”

While ABC did cancel Agent Carter, the good news is that if you are a Hayley Atwell fan, she can still be seen on ABC in her new series, Conviction.

Geoff Johns Promoted To President Of DC Entertainment

Update: It’s confirmed.

It’s being said Geoff Johns has been promoted to President of DC Entertainment, though Warner Bros. has yet to make an official announcement.

Johns, known for writing for DC Comics as well as being the DC Entertainment Chief Creative Officer, recently received new duties following Batman Vs. Superman.

It’s known Geoff Johns is working with WB film exec Jon Berg on the Justice League movies, so the promotion makes a lot of sense. Johns is also involved with DC TV and remains involved with DC Comics.

According to Bleeding Cool, Geoff Johns is both DC Entertainment Chief Creative Officer and President, and still reports to Diane Nelson (who is also President of DC Entertainment). Dan DiDio and Jim Lee, DC Entertainment Co-Publishers, continue report to Diane Nelson as well.

It’s said the promotion happened because of the Batman Vs. Superman “fallout,” and explains the different approach the recent Justice League and Wonder Woman Comic-Con trailers took.

It’s recently become known that Geoff Johns also helped write the Wonder Woman movie script and wrote a treatment for Aquaman with director James Wan as well. Johns is also writing The Batman with Ben Affleck.

I’m sure someone will bring up the fact that Geoff Johns “executive produced” the Green Lantern flop; however, his role could have been more or less as a consultant. There’s also the fact that the writers of the Green Lantern movie, Greg Berlanti and Marc Guggenheim, said not to blame themselves for the failure as their script was different than the final product. Reporters who took part in set visits even offered the storyboards they saw on the Green Lantern movie set (which looked cool) weren’t even a part of the finished movie (for whatever reason).

As I previously wrote, DC seems to be in good hands with Geoff Johns, unlike Marvel who is currently a house divided.

It’s also thought Geoff Johns is the reason why DC TV and the movies are now sharing characters played by different actors (Batman is now rumored for DC TV and Tyler Hoechlin will play Superman on Supergirl).

SEVEN24’s Jordy Randall and Tom Cox, IDW’s Ted Adams and David Ozer, Banditos Yanquis’ Todd Berger, and Circle of Confusion’s Rick Jacobs will all serve as Executive Producers.

Watch: Exorcist TV Series Comic-Con Trailer

Fox released the trailer for their upcoming Exorcist TV series at Comic-Con, which will premiere this coming Fall.

Synopsis:

Widely regarded as the greatest horror movie ever made, “The Exorcist” broke box office records and terrified audiences around the world. Now, more than four decades after the Academy Award-nominated film, THE EXORCIST returns as a TV series.

Directed by Rupert Wyatt (“Rise of the Planet of the Apes”), THE EXORCIST is a propulsive psychological thriller following two very different priests tackling one family’s case of horrifying demonic possession. FATHER TOMAS ORTEGA (Alfonso Herrera, “Sense8,” “The Chosen”) is the new face of the Catholic Church: progressive, ambitious and compassionate. He runs a small but loyal parish in the suburbs of Chicago. He has no idea that his quiet life is about to change forever. Meanwhile, on the other side of the world, another priest finds himself locked in a life-and-death struggle with evil. FATHER MARCUS BRENNAN (Ben Daniels, “Flesh and Bone,” “House of Cards”) is a modern-day Templar Knight, an orphan raised since childhood by the Vatican to wage war against its enemies. Father Marcus is everything Father Tomas is not: relentless, abrasive and utterly consumed by his sacred mission. Caught in the middle is the RANCE family, members of Tomas’ parish. On the surface, they’re a normal, suburban family, but all is not as it seems in this household. The patriarch, HENRY RANCE (guest star Alan Ruck, “Spin City,” “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off”), is slowly but surely losing his mind. Eldest daughter KATHERINE (Brianne Howey, SCREAM QUEENS) has become a recluse who refuses to leave her room. Her younger sister, CASEY (Hannah Kasulka, “The Fosters”), thinks she’s hearing strange noises coming from inside the walls. And mother ANGELA (Academy Award and Golden Globe winner Geena Davis, “Commander in Chief,” “Thelma & Louise”) has been plagued by recurring nightmares, each more frightening than the last. Angela believes there is something in the house, a demonic presence, growing stronger by the day. Desperate, she begs Father Tomas for help, unwittingly setting the naïve young priest on a collision course with Father Marcus. Separately, each faces an insurmountable task, but together they become the only hope against an evil force that has been mobilizing for centuries.

No Agents Of SHIELD Marvel Netflix Crossover Going To Happen

With Marvel TV being responsible for Agents Of SHIELD as well as the Marvel Netflix shows, you would think a crossover could happen at some point (even DC managed Flash and Supergirl with two different networks).

However, outside a venue at Comic-Con, it’s learned a crossover isn’t going to happen any time soon, as apparently, there happens to be some corporate mumbo jumo at Marvel TV that’s not going to allow it.

The cast of Agents Of SHIELD is asked which Marvel character they would like to “chase after” in the below video with the mention of a crossover coming up in the discussion.

Clark Gregg talks about the possibility of Agent Coulson meeting Iron Fist offering he would love to see it happen, but due to red tape, it’s not.

Because it was one of my favorite comics as a teen, I would have said Daniel Rand, Iron Fist, but suddenly there’s a gigantic invisible force-field barrier called “Corporate Stuff,” unless who knows, maybe we will develop a weapon to break through that, and get me over to Netflix for a minute. I would like that. But if that barrier came down, then God knows I’d want to talk to Luke Cage. After seeing the footage… Oh, yeah. [Mike] Colter is a beast.

Maybe this shouldn’t be all that surprising as it’s already known the “Marvel” brand at Disney is rather divided. There’s Marvel Studios, who recently feueded with the TV/comics people over the movies and parted ways. Now we even see there is some sort of divide within Marvel TV? Perhaps the contract with Netflix and/or ABC states the characters can’t appear elsewhere?

I’m surprised Disney is actually letting this happen within Marvel — that everything is so divided — which is opposite what Warner Bros. and DC are doing (Geoff Johns is the glue that binds DC). Marvel Studios also launched their own social networks and did away with their comic book opening for their movies, instead using film footage. Honestly, I can’t help but wonder if Marvel Studios will start to make more original stories (similar to Guardians of the Galaxy) and adapt less of the Marvel Comics, especially considering a lot of the comic book stories from the past 10-20 years were headed by the Marvel TV guys. With Marvel Studios being such a success (and TV/Comics no so much), I wouldn’t mind if Disney would bring everything at Marvel under Feige’s fold.

You know what they say about a house divided, right, Bob Iger?

Star Trek: Discovery TV Series Revealed At Comic-Con

Comic-Con saw Bryan Fuller reveal the title and a teaser for the new Star Trek: Discovery CBS digital TV series.

Not much info was given, but the series is set in continuity with the original Star Trek TV series and thought to precede Star Trek: The Next Generation at some point (possibly around Search for Spock).

Bryan Fuller did reveal they aren’t going the episodic route with Star Trek: Discovery (which saw William Shatner question), and that they are telling stories like a novel, with each season a chapter. Basically what that means is you need to watch all the episodes to get the entire story, which Shatner pointed out; however, Fuller countered by stating all the episodes will be right at your fingertips on digital.

Star Trek: Discovery will debut on CBS in January 2017 prior to airing on CBS All Access.

Bad News: Ghost Rider Not Coming To Marvel Studios

There’s some bad news, and then there is some even more bad news.

The first bit of bad news is that Ghost Rider is not going to appear in a Marvel Studios movie any time soon.

The second bit of bad news is that the Ghost Rider appearing on Marvel TV’s Agents of SHIELD is not Dan Ketch.

Marvel TV (who Kevin Feige booted from being involved in the movies), unveiled the following Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD Season 4 teaser at Comic-Con, which features Ghost Rider.

They also showed off the vehicle of choice of this Ghost Rider — not the super cool motorcyle – but the cruddy suped up car from the Marvel NOW PC comics.

Further bad news comes from the fact that Ghost Rider won’t be on Netflix, which is more mature, but will be on ABC.

Gabriel Luna (Matador,True Detective) is playing the PC version of Ghost Rider with Robbie Reyes who will “will roar into the lives of Agent Coulson and the team.”

Aquaman Rumored For The Flash Season 3

As we previously reported, WB’s rules regarding sharing characters between the TV and movie universes seems to be relaxed, and in addition to Batman, now Aquaman is rumored for DC TV.

According to The Aquaman Shrine Twitter account, we can expect to see a glimpse of Aquaman in Season 3 of The Flash, which is adapting the popular DC Comics Flashpoint storyline.

It’s even possible an announcement could come at this week’s Comic-Con, as The Flash will be there along with the other CW shows.

Regarding Aquaman and the use of the same characters (Superman is now appearing on Supergirl), it’s been said the reason WB didn’t want to share characters (such as Suicide Squad on Arrow) is because of brand recognition — meaning some fans wouldn’t have any idea what characters belong where. I think it’s safe to say now that the Justice League has been introduced, that most fans know who Henry Cavill and Jason Momoa is, and will realize the difference between Tyler Hoechlin playing the Man of Steel, and likewise, whoever plays Batman and Aquaman for DC TV.

It’s also a safe bet to say that since Geoff Johns’ status has been elevated, that things will go a lot more smoother and the use of characters may be relaxed because of his involvement.
