Total War is officially heading into the far future. Creative Assembly unveiled Total War: Warhammer 40,000 with a reveal trailer at The Game Awards 2025, marking the franchise’s first full jump into the grimdark 41st Millennium.
The announcement caps off Total War’s 25th anniversary and continues the studio’s long-running partnership with Games Workshop.
Watch the trailer below.

Total War Goes Grimdark
For the first time in the series’ history, Total War leaves historical and fantasy battlefields behind for full-scale galactic warfare. The game blends classic turn-based strategy with real-time battles across planets, star systems, and war-torn installations.
Players will command armies across a massive galactic sandbox, expanding empires, managing war economies, and deciding the fate of entire worlds. The pitch is simple and brutal: there is no peace—only war.

Four Playable Factions At Launch
At launch, Total War: Warhammer 40,000 will feature four major factions, each built around distinct lore-driven gameplay styles.
Space Marines
Elite, genetically enhanced super-soldiers clad in power armor. Few in number, but devastating in combat, relying on precision, discipline, and overwhelming force.
Orks
Endless green hordes fueled by chaos and destruction. Orks overwhelm enemies with sheer numbers, unpredictable weapons, and ramshackle war machines.
Aeldari
An ancient and fading alien race that once ruled the galaxy. Fast, elusive, and psychic-focused, the Aeldari strike hard at weaknesses before vanishing.
Astra Militarum
Humanity’s largest fighting force. Massive infantry formations supported by tanks, artillery, and relentless firepower grind enemies down through discipline and attrition.

Army Customization And Tabletop Freedom
Customization is a major focus. Players can:
- Name their warbands and regiments
- Choose faction colors and iconography
- Customize sub-factions and warlords
- Tailor combat philosophies with unique abilities, traits, and wargear
Creative Assembly says the goal is to bring tabletop-style freedom into a full Total War campaign.

Galactic Campaigns And Planetary Warfare
The campaign takes place across a galaxy-spanning map where players capture planets, upgrade fleets, and expand their influence turn by turn.
Battles range from orbital bombardments to ground-level real-time engagements across varied biomes and massive installations. Players can even deploy apocalyptic weapons capable of wiping entire planets off the map.

Large-Scale Real-Time Battles
Combat features massive armies, towering war machines, elite units, and faction-specific reinforcements. Terrain destruction plays a key role, with artillery strikes, aerial attacks, and laser fire reshaping the battlefield in real time.
Each engagement is designed to feel cinematic, brutal, and unmistakably Warhammer 40,000.

Game Director Comments
Game Director Attila Mohacsi called the project a dream come true for the team, many of whom are lifelong Warhammer 40,000 fans.
He emphasized the studio’s focus on respecting the scale, tone, and intensity of the setting while preserving what makes Total War unique.
