Back in July, the internet exploded when it was reported that Tom Holland would be open to Spider-Man coming out as gay; however, that is not exactly the case.
While going “undercover” online as part a promotion with GQ, Tom Holland responds to a tweet that stated, “Didn’t Tom Holland say he wanted Spider-Man to be gay?”
Holland responds by offering not his Spider-Man, but a Spider-Man.
“The question asked was, ‘Do you think there should be a gay Spider-Man?'” Holland said referencing the interview from July. “I think that would be a very progressive way to kind of create a new character. So yeah. I don’t see… I think there should be, one day. And I hope that I get to share the screen with that person.”
So we see that Tom Holland never meant he wanted his Spider-Man to come out as gay, but that he wouldn’t mind a different and new version of Spidey being gay.
Tom Holland thinks gay Spider-Man can be a new character
Regarding what Holland had to say back in July about a gay Spider-Man, he said:
“Yeah, of course. I can’t talk about the future of the character because honestly I don’t know and it’s out of my hands. But I do know a lot about the future of Marvel, and they are going to be representing lots of different people in the next few years. The world isn’t as simple as a straight white guy. It doesn’t end there, and these films need to represent more than one type of person.”
It has since been made known that Tessa Thompson’s character in Thor: Love and Thunder with Valkryie, will be gay, as Thompson confirmed Valkryie will be searching for her queen of New Asgard.
Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige also confirmed a gay character will be in Eternals, but stopped short of confirming who it is and said, “He’s married, he’s got a family, and that is just part of who he is.”
As seen in The Avengers: Endgame, director Joe Russo also played a gay character in that support group scene.
