Thunderbolts Dead: Reported $100M Loss, Falling Behind Cap 4

Thunderbolts Dead: Reported $100M Loss, Falling Behind Cap 4

Despite the rebrand to New Avengers, and ties to both The Fantastic Four: First Steps and Avengers: Doomsday, Thunderbolts is looking like a bigger flop than Captain America: Brave New World and even Eternals.

Recently saw it estimated that Thunderbolts won’t even reach $400 million at the box office.

Now the bad news keeps coming as Thunderbolts is now underperforming on the dailies compared to Captain America: Brave New World, while it had been outperforming Cap 4 since day five.

That’s not all, a new report says the flick will lose Disney around $100 million. Disney also recently confirmed in an investor report that Captain America: Brave New World is a loss for them.

Thunderbolts Now Trailing Cap 4 at the Box Office

The latest regarding the Thunderbolts box office is that as of Tuesday, which normally gets more fans in seats thanks to steep discounts, the film made less than Captain America: Brave New World on day 26. Thunderbolts brought in $1,043,332 on Tuesday, while Cap 4 brought in $1,149,804. Captain America: Brave New World‘s worldwide box office is $415,101,577.

Thunderbolts had been outperforming Cap 4 by roughly 50%—sometimes more—but this marks the first time since day five that it’s fallen behind domestically. As of day 26, the two films are nearly tied: Cap 4 was at $178,384,171, while Thunderbolts sits just below at $175,463,912.

If this trend continues, Thunderbolts may not even match Cap 4’s domestic total of $200,500,001, when previously it was on track to perform better.

Thunderbolts Could Lose $100M, Says Report

With Thunderbolts now underperforming so badly, a report from World of Reel offers that the film will be a loss of at least $100M for Disney.

If it lands under $400M, which it is now expected, the flick will be the second-worst in the MCU, only above The Marvels. It also means it won’t have beaten the Eternals‘ $402M back in 2021 (even higher when inflation is factored in).

The site also agrees with me that the break-even number for Thunderbolts is higher than the $450M reported, and is actually thought to be in the $500M range, which is leading to at least a $100M loss for Disney.

More Delays, More Problems: FF, X-Men, and Avengers Shift

Up next is The Fantastic Four: First Steps, which I’ll be honest, is looking like another big bust. It’s probably no coincidence that Disney recently pushed both Avengers: Doomsday and Secret Wars further away from the releases of FF, Tbolts/New Avengers, and Cap 4.

Reports also offer Bob Iger isn’t happy and that Feige’s X-Men plans have been delayed.
