Summary
- Plans for a fourth season of The Mandalorian on Disney+ may have been derailed in favor of the movie
- The news comes from actor Brendan Wayne, who plays the physical version of the titular character
- The movie is expected to begin filming in June and is set for a 2026 release date
Say goodbye to The Mandalorian Season 4 as it is learned plans for a fourth season on Disney+ have been apparently canceled in favor of the recently announced movie.
While it was thought Disney and Lucasfilm would be releasing The Mandalorian Season 4 with a shorter season on Disney+ and then having the movie continue from that, apparently that is no longer the plan.
The move makes sense as The Mandalorian Season 3 wasn’t well received at all. We can also add that more than likely a lot more people go see the movies than watch Disney+, so having the movie continue from Season 4 could come off as confusing and could diminish the theatrical release.
Updates via Brendan Wayne
The updates come via actor Brendan Wayne who plays the physical version of the titular character, which is voiced by Pedro Pascal.
Wayne appeared on The Chatooine Show on YouTube and was asked if he had signed on for The Mandalorian Season 4 or if it’s just going to be a movie.
“No [Season 4],” he said. “I know that we’re doing a movie for sure, that’s what I know.”
“Why do you throw away the foundation that you built your streaming on?”
Wayne continued by questioning why would they throw away the series.
“Unless they are going to abandon streaming, why do you throw away the foundation that you built your streaming on which is The Mandalorian?” he said. “And I mean that as humbly as I can say it but there’s a reason The Mandalorian premiered when Disney+ opened up, and it wasn’t because we had this incredible library that everybody wants to subscribe to, it’s because you had a show that was going to bring a character alive that we all dreamed of since we watched Star Wars, which was a Boba Fett like character.”
Should start filming in June
Brendan Wayne added he thinks the movie will be filmed in June.
“What I heard, it’s what I keep reading everywhere, it’s in June,” he said. That’s I think [what] Jon [Favreau] said. June.”
Excited for Mando on the big screen
While Mando might not be continuing on Disney+, the actor says he is excited to see the character make his theatrical debut.
“How do I think it translates to the big screen? I don’t think there’s any question watching Mando walk in on the big screen after watching him walk in on the small screen and do his business, I don’t even think it’s close. It might make Mando even more popular than he already is,” he said.
Has a 2026 release
The Mandalorian & Grogu is being directed by Jon Favreau. The film doesn’t have an official release date but Disney CEO Bob Iger recently confirmed a 2026 release date.
“I have loved telling stories set in the rich world that George Lucas created,” said Favreau in the announcement from January. “The prospect of bringing the Mandalorian and his apprentice Grogu to the big screen is extremely exciting.”
“Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni have ushered into Star Wars two new and beloved characters, and this new story is a perfect fit for the big screen,” added Kathleen Kennedy, president of Lucasfilm.
