Batman Producer Charles Roven Talks Justice League Characters & Plans (Video)

Check out a video interview above with Batman producer Charles Roven talking about the direction of the DC Justice League characters.

Roven talks about the DC “brain trust,” going different routes for their movies and working with other filmmakers.

Here is some of the text (via Collider):

“I think also very much involved in that brain trust is John Berg, who is the executive vice president at Warner Bros. I would say the Snyders, myself, John Berg, and Geoff Johns would be sort of that Brain Trust… I’m working with great people. They’re all really great people. And not that we don’t—there are many times we agree, and there’s many times we don’t agree [and] we work it out.”

“The other thing that I really love about what we’re doing is we’re also bringing in really talented other filmmakers and having them come in and create—I call it the sandbox. We’ve got this sandbox of the Justice League DC characters, and we are hoping to create—this series of movies that we’ve announced are somewhat interlinked. The characters move at a throughline that hopefully will take us all the way to Justice League 2, but they also can interact in the other films as well in some way.”

“So if, for example, The Flash movie or the Aquaman film is gonna come out after Justice League 1, it’s not gonna be a completely different character; that character will have evolved from Justice League 1. Wonder Woman, when we see her in Justice League 1, will have evolved from Batman v Superman. Unless we decide that in one of these stories we’re gonna do something that happened in the past and have it be more of an origination story, in which case you’ll realize how that character became what they were in the movie that they were first introduced.”

“So that’s really challenging and interesting, and you lay out a road map but then when you bring somebody else in they kinda go, ‘Well you’re going to San Francisco by Route 5, what if you took the 101?’ [And you go] ‘Well that’s interesting, maybe we should go Route 101. What if we did?’ And so that changes the whole thing and all of a sudden you realize you can actually get to where you need to get to by a whole different methodology than what you originally planned. Or you might decide to blend the routes. And by doing that it’s very fresh. You’ve got very fresh ideas, very interesting ideas. It’s just really a lot of fun if you’ve got really great collaborative minds working together to try to make things better, more interesting, more fun, more provocative.”

Geoff Johns & Ivan Reis Back On Aquaman

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:22782:]]

Right in time for Jason Momoa‘s debut as the King Of Atlantis in next March’s Batman Vs. Superman, DC Entertainemnt chief creative officer and DC Comics writer Geoff Johns is returning to Aquaman along with superstar artist Ivan Reis.

Both Johns and Reis launched the New 52 Aquaman comic back in 2011, and now they will be returning for the “Rise of the Seven Seas” storyline that will tie into the Justice League comic as well.

“I can officially say that Ivan Reis, Joe Prado and I have started work on Rise of the 7 Seas! The team is back…” Johns posted on Twitter along with previously released artwork. “We are introducing this mythology piece called the Seven Seas in my last two issues and that’s going to continue into a big Justice League story next year. It warrants Aquaman getting help from the Justice League. It’s too big for him to handle alone, so the seven seas, the seven members of the Justice League — it’s all going to be a nice, big story.”

Batman Vs. Superman Trailer Should Be Coming Soon Says Zack Snyder

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:22613:]]

With the premiere of Batman Vs. Superman only being five months away, a new trailer should be dropping soon. As director Zack Snyder took part in the event for Bob Kane’s Hollywood Star recently, 411 Mania caught up with Snyder to get an update.

Snyder noted, “I think we got to have a trailer soon,” and seeing how he has a friendly rivarly with JJ Abrams, added he is “hoping to” up the ante (the new Star Wars: The Force Awakens trailer saw over 100 million views in its first 24 hours of release).

Snyder also went on to explain that the focus of Batman Vs. Superman is to create the larger DC cinematic universe.

“Listen. I want to — we’re working toward Justice League, and I really want to create the — part of the thing I really want to create is the possibility of a world where they could exist together,” Snyder offered. “I think up to this point, it’s been difficult to suggest a world where Batman and Superman and Wonder Woman and others could exist in the same universe. That was one of the things I really wanted to try and get at. Not to mention, the amazing opportunity to bring those characters and have those characters tell an important story, their own story, within the confines of a film.”

Snyder are talks more about the Batmobile.

“It’s got this crazy gun [on the front part of the vehicle]. It’s super-fast. It’s electrified. It can do all the other Bat-car stuff. But the cool thing I liked about it is that it’s a purpose built Batmobile, right? Which is kind of fun to get back to that.”

“Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” has a March 25, 2016 release starring Ben Affleck as Batman, Henry Cavill as Superman, Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman, Amy Adams as Lois Lane, Laurence Fishburne as Perry White, Diane Lane as Martha Kent, Jeremy Irons as Alfred, Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor, Ray Fisher as Cyborg with Callan Mulvey, Holly Hunter as Senator Finch and Tao Okamoto as Mercy Graves. Justice League is to follow directed by Zack Snyder as well.

Synopsis:

Fearing the actions of a god-like Super Hero left unchecked, Gotham City’s own formidable, forceful vigilante takes on Metropolis’s most revered, modern-day savior, while the world wrestles with what sort of hero it really needs. And with Batman and Superman at war with one another, a new threat quickly arises, putting mankind in greater danger than it’s ever known before.

Ben Affleck Open To Directing Solo Batman Movie

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:22593:]]

With Ben Affleck starring as the new Dark Knight in Batman Vs. Superman, it’s been rumored the actor has been signed on for three Batman movies which will also see him direct. The latest issue of Total Film Magazine has a featured article in which Affleck and producer Charles Roven comment on the potential of Affleck taking the gig.

“He’s got a busy schedule,” Roven said. “He’s about to start a movie now [Live By Night]. And he’s also got obligations to be in the Justice League movies. The calendar is a little tricky. Of course, the script obviously has to be worthy of him wanting to direct. And once that happens, it’s still got to fit into the calendar. We’re hoping we can make it happen. We’re just at the beginning of the question.”

Affleck offered his take: “Look, if I could make it work, yeah. Obviously, it would be like a dream, The trick is, as to any movie, is to make sure that you – if you’re going to direct it – that you can make it good. You’ve got to have the right idea and the right take on it. Broadly speaking, it’s something I’d be open to, for sure. It’s a very exciting idea.”

Amy Adams & Scott McNairy Weigh In On Batman Vs. Superman

Batman Vs. Superman Comic-Con Trailer

We’re about five months away from big debut of Batman Vs. Superman which will launch the Justice League-shared universe as the DC Trinity will be seen together on the big screen.

Warner Bros. has yet to release a new trailer, but a LexCorp viral campaign has started and details about what’s not in the movie have trickled out.

Now both Amy Adams and Scoot McNairy weigh in on the film offering Batman Vs. Superman is both humorous and serious at the same time.

Adams, who will be reprising as Lois Lane from Man of Steel, tells THR:  “I can’t give too much away, but I’m coming into a scene and Batman and Superman are both in the scene, so I can say that. And it was just fun. Because they had been working together for a couple weeks and just running it, seeing this dynamic. I’ll talk about this when we’re promoting the movie and we can tell more. But there were definitely funny moments involving bat-suits and such.”

McNairy, whose own role is shrouded in secrecy (yet may have been revealed in a fan-theory), stated in a recent press event (picked up by We Got This Covered): “This is the superhero film that is more grounded in reality than any of the other ones. It’s a comic book movie, yes, but it’s very, very grounded.”

Flash Movie Costume Rumored To Look Like Armor

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:22414:]]

I suppose when you are the fastest man alive nothing can weigh you down because, according to a new rumor, The Flash suit Ezra Miller may be wearing in the movie is described as similar to armor.

According to Den Of Geek, a source filled them in that the movie studio is trying to avoid “any comparison to the well designed and received TV version,” and that they are aiming to create a more “tech-based” suit that is said to look quite different than the Grant Gustin Flash costume.

It’s said the Ezra Miller Flash costume will look more “like armor” with comparisons to The Flash from the Injustice: Gods Among Us video game (see above).

Ezra Miller’s Barry Allen is also described as a “tech geek.”

Speaking of Miller he has some rather large shoes to fill as Gustin’s Flash is pretty popular. Interestingly enough, we do already have seen alternate versions of characters on the TV series, and Miller even stated they exist in parallel universes, so hopefully both can work at the same time (though separate).

Ezra Miller debuts in Batman Vs. Superman next March followed by Justice League and The Flash standalone movie in 2019 directed by Seth Grahame-Smith with a script by Grahame-Smith based on the story from Phil Lord and Chris Miller.

Cartoon Network Confirms New Justice League Animated Series

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:22105:]]

Following the discovery of the animated Justice League poster from a month ago, now a new animated Justice League series is confirmed by Cartoon Network.

Cartoon Network Canada responded to a fan question on their Facebook page with (via toonzone.net): “We will be premiering a new Justice League series, but not likely until next Fall.”

As noted by a forum poster, the Cartoon Network shows usually air later in Canada than in the U.S., so that would mean the new Justice League animated series – speculated to be titled “Justice League Action” – would debut at least in the Fall of 2016.

The last Justice League animated series aired back in 2006 with Justice League Unlimited, which is coming to Blu-Ray soon.

The news of the new Justice League animated series coincides with the launch of the DC movie universe including Batman Vs. Superman next March, Suicide Squad next August, followed by Wonder Woman and the Justice League Part 1 film.

George Miller Confirms DC Talks; No Man Of Steel 2 (Video)

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:22289:]]

A little over a month ago saw a rumor hit that George Miller was set to direct the sequel to Man of Steel. It was then said that Man of Steel 2 was put on permantent hold, but that Miller could direct whatever interested him. Zack Snyder even said the door was open for Miller.

Now word comes directly from the director of Mad Max: Fury Road that he isn’t directing Man of Steel 2, but George Miller does confirm talks with DC.

“There has been some of that in the mix, but I would say, probably not true,” Miller responded to DC and Man of Steel 2 questioning while talking with Digital Insider.

“I was going to do a Justice League movie that fell through in 2009,” Miller continued. “Not a fault of anybody’s fault except a new Australian govenment wasn’t agile enough with their rebates. It went indecisive. There was a writers strike. The planets didn’t align for that one, but I’ve always been interested in mythology, and the superhero movies are basically new incarnations of the greek and roman mythologies. That’s always something I’m interested in.”

Miller did note he is a DC fan as well.

“I group in an era that was mainly DC, and so they are the pantheon for me,” Miller said. “I’ve seen some of them. I obviously haven’t seen Batman Vs. Superman. I love [Zack Snyder’s] work.”

Miller also noted the next film he directs he hopes will be small.

“I hope the next film I make is a very small film without any special effects and not many stunts.”

Guillermo Del Toro Says Pacific Rim 2 Is Still A Go

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:22152:]]

An earlier report made mention that Pacific Rim 2 has been put on indefinite hiatus, thought to be due to a squabble between Legendary Entertainment and Universal Studios.

Now that news is being contradicted by Guillermo del Toro.

EW.com caught up with the director to get the scoop with Guillermo del Toro stating as far as he is concerned, Pacific Rim 2 is still happening.

“We are still turning in a screenplay and a budget in three weeks,” Guillermo Del Toro said. “As far as I’m concerned, it’s not gone. We’re still on it.”

Del Toro did confirm Pacific Rim 2 has been delayed.

“It moved further,” he said. “I may do another movie in the middle.”

Del Toro did pass on WB’s Justice League Dark movie for Pacific Rim 2, but now with word of PR2 being delayed, we can hope Guillermo Del Toro will now do JLD.

Pacific Rim 2 was originally due out some time in 2017.

DC Comics Cancelling 5 Titles As Of December

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:22101:]]

It’s learned DC Comics is cancelling five titles as of December with Justice League United, Gotham By Midnight, The Omega Men, Lobo and Doomed.

All of the titles except for Justice League United are selling less than 20k as of July, so the news shouldn’t be all that surprising.

In the case of Lobo, which is the lowest selling of the five with less than 13k, DC rebooted the character with more of a Twilight/Elvis look, with most fans not being too happy about the change in direction of the Main Man.

It’s also learned Catwoman will have a new creative team as of December’s issue #47 with writer Frank Tieri and artist Inaki Miranda on board.

As CBR notes, the creators of the above cancelled comics still have other titles in the works at DC.

Update: Regarding the cancellation of Omega Men, Dan DiDio responded as follow on Facebook to fan complaints:

It was a tough decision, we all felt the series had great potential, but sales dropped from issue to issue quicker than expected.

Zack Snyder Jabs At Marvel & Ant-Man; Talks More Batman Vs Superman

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:22035:]]

Zack Snyder is making the press rounds as of late promoting his involvment in the Doritos Superbowl contest where the director has been talking about Batman Vs. Superman and Justice League. Snyder previously commented on the Robin rumors in the film, and now again comments on recent statements by Steven Spielberg that said the superhero movie genre might go the way of the Western, which sees Snyder take a jab at Marvel and Ant-Man.

Speaking with The Daily Beast, Snyder insinuates that the Marvel movies have no staying power compared to the DC characters.

“It goes to the mythological nature of the movies that we’re making,” Snyder said in regards to Spielberg’s sentiments. “I feel like [Spielberg’s] right. But I feel like Batman and Superman are transcendent of superhero movies in a way, because they’re Batman and Superman. They’re not just, like, the flavor of the week Ant-Man—not to be mean, but whatever it is. What is the next Blank-Man?”

Snyder says both Batman and Superman are of mythological proportions and again takes another jab at Marvel.

“It’s a tricky process, setting up the DC universe, or Justice League,” Snyder said. “The credit goes to [Batman Begins director] Chris Nolan because he set the die for the DC Universe in a great way that I tried to emulate. I look at it as more being mythological than, say, bubblegum. And I think that that’s appropriate for Batman and Superman because they’re the most mythological of our superheroes.”

The interview also sees Zack Snyder confront another rumor that Batman Vs. Superman will feature more of Batman (which is a no-brainer if you think about it as it’s the first Ben Affleck Batman appearance).

“Only in that because it’s a different Batman than the Batman that was in the Chris Nolan movies, so we have a little bit more explaining to do—and you justhad a whole Superman movie,” he smiled. “But I think only in that way, because you need to understand where Batman is with everything. And that’s more toward the beginning, but it evens back out as it goes on.”

Update: Snyder talks more about Marvel and Ant-Man as well as the possility of George Miller directing a DC movie.

Zack Snyder Talks Batman Vs. Superman, Justice League & Robin

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:22002:]]

Warner Bros. and DC are teaming with Doritos for the “Crash the Superbowl” contest, which will see the winning filmaker of a Doritos Super Bowl commercial working with director Zack Snyder on a DC movie.

You can enter the contest here, and Snyder also talked with Yahoo about Batman Vs. Superman and Justice League.

Regarding Batman Vs. Superman, back in June the cinematographer on the movie teased an image of Zack Snyder’s 19-year-old son Eli with “Boy Wonder” leading many fans to speculate Eli Snyder is playing the sidekick to Ben Affleck’s Batman; however, Zack Snyder shoots down the rumor.

“There’s a rumor that my son is [playing] Robin. It’s not true,” Snyder said. “Now there are all these images of him that people have made where he’s dressed like Robin. It’s fun to hear and see them.”

With so many DC projects in the works, Snyder offers he is mainly focusing on three of them, but is also on board to help out with the rest.

“I’m staying with Batman V Superman and Justice League and Justice League 2 — those are my main responsibilities, as well as producing the other movies,” Snyder offered. “That’s the main line. Once you get Justice League, you’re pretty deep in it. But like I was saying, not to be a selfless promoter of our program, what it shows is that we have this giant berth of opportunity with the DC movies now to I think find the opportunities for even young filmmakers to even get involved because there are so many projects.”

Here is the current slate of DC movies:

2016:
March 25: Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice
August 5: Suicide Squad

2017:
June 23: Wonder Woman
November 17: Justice League, Part 1

2018:
March 23: The Flash
July 27: Aquaman

2019:
April 5: Shazam
June 14: Justice League, Part 2

2020:
April 3: Cyborg
June 19: Green Lantern Corps

Steven Spielberg Thinks Superhero Movies Popularity Will Come To An End

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:21935:]]

Are superhero movies doomed?

If we go by Steven Spielberg’s recent statements, comic book movies are to go the way of the Western.

“We were around when the Western died and there will be a time when the superhero movie goes the way of the Western. It doesn’t mean there won’t be another occasion where the Western comes back and the superhero movie someday returns,” Spielberg told the AP, reports Yahoo.

Spielberg goes on to explain his thoughts in that he thinks super hero movies are part of a cycle, and that someone will eventually come up with something new.

“Of course, right now the superhero movie is alive and thriving. I’m only saying that these cycles have a finite time in popular culture,” Spielberg offered. “There will come a day when the mythological stories are supplanted by some other genre that possibly some young filmmaker is just thinking about discovering for all of us.”

Spielberg also previously said he feels Hollywood is headed toward an “implosion” because of the over-abundance of mega-budget movies, in which he still feels the same way.

“I do. I still feel that way,” Spielberg said.

Speaking of mega-budget movies, Spielberg was executive producer on the blockbuster Jurassic World, which had a $150 million budget of its own, and with the success of the Marvel movies, and most likely the DC movies, it doesn’t seem as if the superhero doomsday is coming any time soon.

Up next for Spielberg is the adaptation of Ready Player One in which he will direct for WB.

Michael Wilkinson Talks New Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman & Aquaman Costumes

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:21772:]]

Oscar-nominated costume designer Michael Wilkinson, noted for American Hustle, Tron and Zack Snyder’s Watchmen, Sucker Punch, 300 and Man of Steel, returns for Batman Vs. Superman and Justice League.

People’s Choice caught up with Wilkinson who is in Las Vegas for the MAGIC Panel at the Las Vegas Convention Center where the following was offered about the new Batman Vs. Superman costumes:

Updated Superman Costume:

We tweaked the Superman suit only slightly from our suit from Man of Steel. We streamlined plus sharpened the details of the costume a little to suit the more earthly (less alien) context of this film.

Zack had a great idea to have some kryptonian script [writing] subliminally included in the details of the suit, so we made that happen (update: you can check out details images of the scripts in Superman’s costume here)

Ben Affleck’s Batman Costume:

The batsuit is a complete 180 degree turn from the previous film incarnations — our Batman’s power comes from his incredible physical strength and fighting skills, not from armor. The director Zack Snyder wanted him to look as much like the comic book version as possible — to be respectful to the original source.

My favorite details of the batsuit are the brass knuckles on the gloves.

Gal Gadot Wonder Woman Costume:

As for the Wonder Woman suit, well she has never been seen in a film before, so there was nothing to compare it to! There is of course the costume from the TV show. Zack wanted our character to be a fierce and intimidating warrior — gritty, battle-scarred and immortal.

There is ancient Greek script [writing] on Wonder Woman’s weapons too.

Jason Momoa Aquaman Costume: (note: Wilkinson looks to have confirmed Momoa will be seen in the Aquaman costume in Batman Vs. Superman):

It was pretty hard to get Jason to get out of his Aquaman costume. It really became part of him.

Here are pics of the new costumes (click to enlarge):

Henry Cavill Says Big Plans Are In Place For Justice League Movie Universe

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:21692:]]

This weekend sees The Man From UNCLE open in theaters which stars Armie Hammer and Henry Cavill.

While discussing the movie, Cavill talked about the DC Cinematic Universe, Batman Vs. Superman, Man of Steel and even the upcoming (unrelated) Warcraft movie.

Regarding the DC Expanded Universe, Cavill offered everything is connected.

“There’s a big plan in place at WB for the whole DC franchise,” Cavill told Uproxx. “So, all of this stuff ties in. They’re not thinking from movie to movie, they’re thinking from a big tent pole type thing and each story has its own story, which is attached to the major issue. Yeah, there’s a big plan.”

Henry Cavill also happens to be a big Warcraft fan, so much so that he missed Zack Snyder’s initial call in regards to getting the Superman part on Man of Steel because he was playing the game. Cavill offers he used to play the game a lot, and Hammer and Cavill joke about Henry looking forward to Batman Vs. Superman more because Cavill isn’t getting paid for Warcraft.

“Yeah, Warcraft isn’t making me any money!” Cavill laughed. “But, yes, BvS, I’m really looking forward to. But with World of Warcraft, I’m excited to see what it’s like because that’s a hard thing to translate, and there are a lot of people who feel strongly about the lore in that, so we will see.”

Cavill also went on to confirm a connection between Man of Steel and the Batman Vs. Superman trailer (watch below), which showed heat vision destroying Metropolis with Ben Affleck’s Bruce Wayne looking on.

“That’s when Zod loses his mind and can’t control his heat vision and blasts everything out,” Cavill confirmed.

Do we have confirmation of a Green Lantern for the DC Cinematic Universe?

An actor tweeted out what looks to be confirmation that he has been cast in the DCCU.

Ricardo Segarra posted that he will be seeing the DC Cinematic Universe soon, and then tweeted out the Green Lantern oath with “in brightest day.” Searra also include the hashtags for Batman vs. Superman and Justice League.

Segarra was questioned about it on Twitter, replying to a fan: “I can not confirm or deny. But who wouldn’t want to be a Green Lantern?”

Ricardo Segarra’s iMDB page only lists a few movies that the actor has been a part of, but his resume does list that he has pro-wrestling and weight training experience.

In the DC Comics, Green Lantern Kyle Rayner is of Latino descent as his father was a Chicano CIA agent.

Is Ricardo Segarra playing Green Lantern Kyle Rayner for the planned Green Lantern Corps movie in 2020?

Update: Lance Gross (Grey’s Anatomy, Crisis) may be teasing Green Lantern John Stewart as well, as the actor posted an image of the Green Lantern symbol on Instagram adding: “In brightest day.”

Update #2: Ricardo Segarra deleted the “In brightest day…” tweet, and also tweeted about Shazam.
