First Look At Dwayne Johnson In Fast 8; Teases Spinoff Movie

Dwayne Johnson has taken to his socials network to reveal a first look at his character, Hobbs, in Fast 8.

Johnson included the following, which mentions it’s possible we may see Hobbs in a spinoff movie.

EXCLUSIVE FIRST LOOK: #HOBBS #F8
When you strip a man of all he has. All that’s important to him. You force him to return to his roots.. and sometimes that’s a very dangerous and twisted place.

If I was going to return for another FAST & FURIOUS I wanted to come in and disrupt the franchise in a cool way that got fans fired up and their blood pumping to see a new version of Hobbs and his “Daddy’s gotta go to work” mentality and set the table in a cool way for where the character goes in the future.

Maybe it’s a spinoff movie. Maybe it’s more #FF movies. Or hell maybe Hobbs just gets on his motorcycle and rides off into the sunset never to be seen again.  Either way, I’ve had a solid first week of shooting, good to be back with the ohana, good to work again w/ my bud and director F. Gary Gray and our home studio of UNIVERSAL, as always have been the best partners to me and my #SevenBucksProds team. Most importantly… you guys around the world will really dig this new version of the role, ’cause as we always say, disrupters dent the universe.

Batman vs. Superman Ticket Sales Outpacing Deadpool, Avengers and Fast & Furious

Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman are not only set to kick each other’s butts, but by the looks of advanced ticket sales, the DC Trinity are going to take down Deadpool, Avengers and Fast & Furious.

Deadline reports the advanced ticket sales for Batman Vs. Superman are out performing Fox’s Deadpool (opening weekend $132.4M), Marvel’s The Avengers ($207.4M opening weekend) and Universal’s Furious 7 ($147.1M opening weekend) two weeks prior to its U.S. debut.

It’s further said the advanced ticket sales figure is somewhere between $20-25 million, which is similar to The Dark Knight Rises ($25 million) that went on to have a $160.9 million opening.

As it stands, it’s estimated Batman Vs. Superman could open from around $140 to $160 million.

The current record-holder for advanced tickets is held by Star Wars: The Force Awakens with $50 million.

“Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” has a March 25, 2016 release starring Ben Affleck as Batman, Henry Cavill as Superman, Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman, Amy Adams as Lois Lane, Laurence Fishburne as Perry White, Diane Lane as Martha Kent, Jeremy Irons as Alfred, Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor, Ray Fisher as Cyborg with Callan Mulvey, Holly Hunter as Senator Finch and Tao Okamoto as Mercy Graves.

Synopsis:

Fearing the actions of a god-like Super Hero left unchecked, Gotham City’s own formidable, forceful vigilante takes on Metropolis’s most revered, modern-day savior, while the world wrestles with what sort of hero it really needs. And with Batman and Superman at war with one another, a new threat quickly arises, putting mankind in greater danger than it’s ever known before.

Fast & Furious 8 Gets April 14, 2017 Release Date

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:20202:]]

Following the billion dollar success of Fast & Furious 7, Universal has wasted no time, and now has announced a release date for the eighth installment in the franchise.

Vin Diesel made the Fast & Furious 8 announcement today at CinemaCon.

“It means a lot to me to get your blessing,” Diesel told the exhibitors as he held back tears, according to Variety. “We were giddy and excited. You all gave me so much confidence. There was so much love.”

It’s noted that just before Vin Diesel made his announcement, footage screened of the final moment of Fast & Furious 7: a scene in which Vin Diesel and Paul Walker’s characters go on one final car race before going their separate ways.

“You’ve been so loyal all along,” Diesel told exhibitors. “You helped us create history here.”

Fast & Furious 7 has already hit over $1.15 billion dollars worldwide, with over $300 million in the U.S.

Fast & Furious 7’s James Wan Wanted For Aquaman

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:19995:]]

It’s reported James Wan is WB’s top choice to direct the Aquaman movie starring Jason Momoa.

THR reports that hot off the heels of the of Fast & Furious 7‘s $500 million debut, Warner Bros. is in preliminary talks with Wan.

It’s said there is no offer on the table, but the hope is in choosing Wan that the director would bring both critical and financial success to Aquaman.

It’s unknown if Wan would be able to find time to direct Aquaman as Wan may potentially direct the Fast & Furious 7 sequel and has The Conjuring 2: The Enfield Poltergeist in the pipeline as well.

WB wants someone like James Wan to bring a more serious approach to Aquaman, whom has been the butt of jokes amongst fans for decades. We see that WB is pretty serious about the character by choosing Momoa as well.

Jason Momoa will first appear in Batman Vs . Superman before Aquaman and will be a part of the two Justice League movies.

Aquaman is due in 2018 with two separate scripts being written by Will Beall and Kurt Johnstad, respectively.

Movie Review: Fast & Furious 7

How Do You Say Goodbye?

A Film Review of Furious 7

You don’t.  At least, you do not say farewell in the definitive manner one could expect when a popular film series stands at the crossroads between the lives of Paul Walker and the character he played, Brian O’Connor.  The passing of Paul Walker was a tragic loss for many and it presented a serious complication to the completion of Furious 7.  There is no prescribed playbook for handling real life and death in any situation, but the purported alterations to the production by director James Wan, writer Chris Morgan and producers Thomas Tull, Samantha Vincent and Vin Diesel were inevitable.  These changes also happened to be executed in the classiest of classy manners not always associated with Hollywood pettiness and bookended a franchise built upon muscles, mayhem, explosions, action and cars with warmth and heart.

What allows these kinds of on the fly “changes” happens to be the miscellaneous nature of the overall story of The Fast and the Furious franchise.  It’s not like these films have X amount of major plot points to develop at particular times during various film releases like the Marvel Cinematic Universe.  Whether the team (or rather, the family) assaults a military escort, drives cars on water, blow up a space station or has a picnic is neither here nor there.  Two things drive these films: character and over-the-top action.  Furious 7 is the third film in the series since Justin Lin raised the bar for the franchise after he realized cars and street racing with any old characters simply won’t do.  Lessons learned from the disappointment of Tokyo Drift (2006) opened Lin’s eyes to the power of the characters and mythos the franchise had already established and used nostalgia to make it reach new heights.  Director James Wan continues to tap into this trend by bringing back even more faces from the past (I’m looking at you Tokyo Drift) along with new series baddies Jason Statham as Deckard Shaw and Djimon Hounsou as Jakande.  The film wastes no time establishing big brother to Owen Shaw (big bad of F&F 6) as a legitimate and perhaps superior threat to Dominic Toretto’s family to date.  Then the story is off to the races to conveniently wrap up every loose end from the last film as well as Tokyo Drift while giving the family a new reason to get back in the game.  What follows is an impromptu skip around the world and back to where it all started in LA and the audience barely has time to take a breath between any sequence thanks to the over cramming of action at all times.

The one weakness that the story presented to me was when the film approached its climax.  At about the ¾ point in the film, Brian O’Connor (Paul Walker) is put into 3-4 specifically solo deadly situations and it was after the first that my attention seemed to split off every time his character was seemingly “gonna get it.”  Instead of maintaining my focus on simply processing all of the high octane eye candy that was constantly being blasted into my visual cortex, I became hyper sensitive to scenes where Brian alone was in danger.  I wanted to be fully alert to appreciate (or loathe) O’Connor’s final moment of truth.  None associated with this film production directly hinted at how Paul Walker’s death would be incorporated into this film and the natural presumption for us all is that his character would perish in some heroic manner for the story.  I can neither confirm nor deny any of said speculation in the name of keeping spoilers locked in the closet, but I didn’t like how I was distracted by the elephant in the room.  What’s worse is that it seems as though the filmmakers did so on purpose in what seems like a series of teases when they could have easily shared the danger more evenly amongst the entire cast.  All in all, the story of Furious 7 is too reminiscent of the past three films and that’s great if all you want is another stroll down memory lane.  By now, confidence in these characters and this particular fictional world should be more than enough to start taking risks to allow them to deviate outside their tried and true behavior if for any other reason than to shake things up.  Unfortunately, this is not the case for this movie.

Again, plot was never a priority for these films and that’s totally fine so long as it filled the void with spectacular stunts, combat and action.  The F&F franchise puts on its weight training belt, injects its syringe of “protein supplement” and flexes its mammoth biceps in this respect.  When it comes to the shear balance of gunplay, fisticuffs and vehicular warfare, Furious 7 leaves its every predecessor in the dust.  The set pieces may not be as imposing, the explosions may not be as engulfing and the stunts may not be as eye rolling-ly ridiculous, but their juxtaposition within the overall playtime of the film keeps the audience off guard and never bores the audience with too much shooting or punching or driving at any one time.  The hand to hand combat on display throughout is top notch with an exceptional nod to Statham vs. Diesel as part of the film’s climax sequence.  Guns are a mainstay of every action film, but I am surprised with all the steroid induced rage throughout this series that we haven’t seen an appearance by a hand toted mini-gun.  We can all thank The Rock for doing so here.  Car stunts were much more focused on wrecking and destruction rather than acrobatics and nimbleness.  You should rest easy knowing that Furious 7 is a guy’s guy film that oozes Olympian levels of testosterone from every orifice at all times.

Performances by the entire cast are as reliable as just about every installment of this franchise’s take at the box office.  Diesel is an effective talk less, fist first leader.  Dwayne Johnson flings about charismatic one-liners as well as his massive arms.  Paul Walker’s got a pretty smile and channels his pseudo-free-running kung fu style.  Tyrese Gibson is a great, clueless peacock and Ludacris is the perfect check to Roman’s general jack-asseryJordana Brewster is an effective pretty girl being the protective den mother and Michelle Rodriguez fills in the prerequisite “girls can kick ass too” role.  Jason Statham was born to do action films and whether he’s the hero or the villain, you can count on him to deliver the intensity.  These actors do what they do well, once again, even if you have seen them do all of this before.  I simply didn’t understand the inclusion of Kurt Russell as Mr. Nobody.  Don’t get me wrong, I love the guy and his body of work, but F&F is certainly not a franchise that suffers from a lack of star power (especially recently) and there’s no reason to nudge this franchise any closer to The Expendables when it clearly made these movies less about the cars and more about the combat by the fourth film anyway.

Furious 7 is a good blockbuster primer to May 1st and beyond the rest of the summer.  However, it isn’t great and by the seventh film in any series, if major shifts in character, plot development, effects or overall feel haven’t occurred then fatigue is assured and this super car is running low on fuel.  Where do you go when you’ve already pushed the dial to 11 with Fast Five?  Loyal fanboys will not only get their fill with Furious 7, but they could easily see more movies get green lit (and why not with an opening weekend global take at the box office over $384 million).  Those kinds of numbers all but assure an 8th entry, but this family feel good action rollercoaster needs to take new twists and turns.  Going back to the same canister of nitrous only takes you so far, so fast.  This movie is almost worth seeing only for the final send off to Paul Walker which is framed within a very personal voiceover of brotherhood by Vin Diesel.  It was respectful, loving and a bit tear-jerking.

Movie Review: Fast & Furious 6

A Little Left in the Tank

A Film Review of Fast & Furious 6

By: Lawrence Napoli

Back in 2001, a little movie called The Fast and the Furious introduced mainstream America to contemporary street racing, NOS and Vin Diesel doing what he apparently does best.  None could have predicted that this series would have turned into such an immense financial success considering it took three different directors before finding one that was truly committed in Justin Lin and his first entry (Tokyo Drift) is to this day regarded as the weakest link.  Lin listened to the fans and got back to the basics of what made this fiction work and the result was a cacophony of stunts that continued to push the envelope, an added level of brawling combat and gunplay, but most importantly characters that had explosive chemistry together.  Fast & Furious 6 is the most recent entry and it’s a rarity to find any franchise capable of holding up to that kind of mileage.  If any of you have concerns regarding the possible sputtering of a series long overdue to be put to bed, know that Fast & Furious 7 is already in pre-production and we’ve just gotten past opening weekend for #6.  No studio is dumb enough to gut that kind of golden calf before at least running it (humiliatingly) into the ground.

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:8160:]]

Is the franchise hanging on for dear life?

Writers Chris Morgan and Gary Scott Thompson return to pen F&F6 and they try really hard to duplicate the general plot points of the last film: assemble the team, give them a challenge, car stunts, punches to the face, victory.  It sounds simple enough, but Fast Five was such an incredible experience for being the first to draw in all the marquee characters from the previous films and added The Rock to the mix as the cherry on top.  In effect, the F&F franchise capitalized on an “Avengers” effect even before that movie came out.  Unfortunately, most of what the audience experiences in 6 feels awfully familiar as we see our favorite criminals with hearts of gold doing the same things they’ve done before with the same level of camaraderie.  The story still feels big, but the logistics of getting these main characters back into the conflict seems a tad convoluted and everything else that follows from character arcs to twists come off as slightly ridiculous.

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:8161:]]

The team is back.  Now give the audience a reason to stay.

I think the film trailers actually worked against the writers in that they revealed too many major plot twists such as spear hooks into giant planes and the return of Letty, someone believed to have been dispatched as of the fourth film.  Perhaps the trailer reveals wouldn’t have been so bad had there been larger spectacles and/or developments lying in wait, but this was not the case.  To compensate, Morgan and Thompson reach further back into the franchise mythos to resurrect slightly more obscure characters which is nice for nostalgia, but not enough to keep the Fast and Furious formula fresh.  What’s worse is that to appreciate F&F6 you must have seen every previous film because the references to the past and a thematic return to what once was in the very first film is the engine for this film.  That being said, the story is entertaining enough while maintaining that satisfying focus on family as well as a couple of neat developments along the way.

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:8162:]]

Guess who’s back?

For a franchise built on car races and stunts, I find it disappointing yet somewhat inevitable for it to have evolved into a more standard action/adventure film.  There’s also a hell of a lot of jumping, falling and launching of bodies in this movie which is an interesting curveball to the action, but seems far too super-heroic even for former street racers, hackers and ex-FBI to be capable of.  F&F6 features the most combat action from gunplay and fisticuffs to date which is executed very well on screen, but plays a second fiddle to the true spectacle: massive set-piece-chaos.  Notable sequences are the car chase around London and the climactic run-in with a military transport plane near the end.  The problem with both of these sequences is that we’ve seen chases similar to the prior and the latter boils down to movement in a straight line for what seems to be a 30 mile runway.  The absurdity of the action mirrors the exponential proficiency of each and every protagonist which, despite the separation in real and in-film time between all the sequels, still feels like Paul Walker is trying to squeeze out an extra 10 horsepower from his cheesy import.  None of this will probably to most fans seeing how a 6th entry in a film series has more to do with luring crowds in with familiarity rather than innovation.  But know this, at no one point does F&F6 outshine its predecessor in any aspect of filmmaking, which leads me to conclude that Justin Lin needs a satisfying and conclusive way to wrap up this fiction for part 7 before it gets recognized as Saw’s spiritual successor.

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:8163:]]

Tyrese believes he can fly.

Performances across the board for F&F6 were reliable and expected.  No one outshines anyone else and every character (save for Letty) behaves exactly as they have with no surprises.  That being said, this film is all about Vin Diesel’s Dominic Toretto and every other character, even The Rock, falls in line.  I’m sure Diesel is a great guy to work with, but his emotional range varies between mopey-eyed to angry-mopey-eyed and that’s it.  This is unfortunate considering this film gave his character an opportunity to emote a little more in between bouts of crashing and punching.  Luke Evans as the nefarious Shaw presents as generic of a villain as one can get, but then no villain in a F&F film ever stood out something to truly watch out for either the characters’ or audience’s perspective.  They’re all merely speed bumps to the action and camaraderie.  The Rock, Dwayne Johnson, is noteworthy because he’s still himself and built like he could run through a brick wall without suffering a scratch.  Like the rest of the cast, he doesn’t really show anything new acting wise, so if you are interested in that, I suggest you check out Pain & Gain.

Can you still smell what I’m cooking?

The true theme of Fast & Furious 6 is: “been there, done that.”  If you want you your fill of action and consider yourself too cool for super heroes, too dumb for sci-fi or too interested in a sex life for fantasy, this film will adequately address your needs.  But it is also by no means a game-changer for this summer as something truly remarkable to see and this will reflect at the box office.  Fast Five represented the peak of what this franchise was capable of accomplishing in terms of story, action and character as well as being a natural end that culminates on a high note.  Dragging everyone back for this film officially feels like going through the motions and I don’t particularly care for that.  The film’s teaser reveal post-credits connects the fiction back to Tokyo Drift (the last sequel in the franchise, chronologically) even seems like jumping the shark because the actor earmarked as the big bad for F&F7 was a real surprise, but in hindsight feels way over the top.  Fast & Furious may be biting off of The Expendables and that franchise is already getting as tired, old and dusty as Stallone himself.
