Tom Holland Says They Tried To Make Miles Morales Spider-Man

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:23199:]]

In a recent interview while promoting his latest film, In The Heart of the Sea (which stars Chris Hemsworth), Tom Holland talks about auditioning and getting cast for Spider-Man.

Interestingly enough, according to Holland, either Sony or Marvel (or the Marvel Creative Committee that Feige canned) was attempting to make Miles Morales as Spider-Man. Holland filled the Daily Beast in on the info:

“I know they’re trying to make Miles Morales, but let me try and send a self-tape.” The agent replied, “Actually, they’ve requested you to send a self-tape.”

Holland goes on to tell the story of how he worked on self-tapes with both Joel Kinnaman and Jon Bernthal (who was recently cast as the Punisher in Marvel’s Daredevil Netflix series).

“I went on to my next movie, Pilgrimage, and by that point I’d done two self-tapes, and they asked me to do another self-tape,” he says. “So I did a second set of sides and this time I had Jon Bernthal helping me out, which was great. I had to do those sides twice and my agents kept telling me, ‘This is the one!’ And then they’d ring me saying I have to do another one. I ended up doing five self-tapes in total.”

Holland continues with mention he participated in two screen tests, one with Robert Downey Jr. and the other with Chris Evans.

“I went to Sarah Finn’s office and did a reading with her, and after that I got asked to screen-test,” says Holland. “I did two—one with RDJ, Robert Downey Jr., who was amazing. I couldn’t have asked for a cooler guy. And the second test was with Chris Evans, and it was pretty awesome and kind of surreal for me.”

Holland also reiterates that the standalone Spider-Man film will be similar in tone to a John Hughes movie (Mr. Mom, Sixteen Candles, Weird Science, Home Alone, Breakfast Club, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off) and not like the Christopher Nolan Batman movies.

“It’s not The Dark Knight,” he says. “One of the special things about what we’re going to try and create is that you’re going to see the biggest independent film ever. It’s not going to be an epic thing; it’s going to be a film surrounded by these incredible things, but that follows this boy and his life. Peter Parker is a favorite of many because everyone can relate to him, and we’re going to try to make everyone relate to our Peter Parker. And John Hughes is a perfect example of what we’re going to try and do.”

Tom Holland is first set to appear in Captain America: Civil War in May followed by the standalone Sony Spider-Man movie in 2017.

Batman Vs. Superman Trailer Scores On Twitter

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:23172:]]

While Captain America: Civil War crushed Batman Vs. Superman in terms of overall trailer viewings in its first 24 hours, the recent Dawn of Justice trailer took home the title for most talk on Twitter.

It’s reported that the Batman Vs. Superman trailer was tweeted even more than the Captain America: Civil War trailer in its first week and is #5 overall for the year.

While the Captain America: Civil War trailer shattered the world record with 61 million views in its first 24 hours to Batman Vs. Superman‘s 23 million (accounting for YouTube, Facebook, Twitter viewings, etc.), Batman Vs. Superman quite possibly may have surpassed Civil War in total as a quick look at various accounts on YouTube and Facebook seems to suggest BVS is now in the lead.

Numbers to date for both trailer viewings have yet to be released, but on WB’s YouTube channel, Batman Vs. Superman netted around 16.5 million views to Civil War‘s 8 million on Marvel’s YouTube. Likewise, on Facebook, Batman Vs. Superman is at 15 million views to Civil War‘s 5.3 million.

Sounds Like Iron Spider Armor For Spider-Man in Captain America: Civil War

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:23166:]]

It’s already been confirmed that Tom Holland will be seen in the classic red and blue Spider-Man costume in Captain America: Civil War, but now it looks like Holland may be sporting more than one Spidey costume.

Captain America: Civil War co-director Anthony Russo was asked about the rumor of multiple Spider-Man costumes in an interview and hinted at more than one costume (via Super Interssante):

SUPER: There are many rumors are talking about two, three uniforms in the film. What can you talk about it?

Anthony Russo: Well, we did a lot of research and experimented with the looks of each character. We went through the same process with Spider-Man. We knew it was going to be someone young and it was very important to us because we wanted to give this essence to the character, because he is someone unique to the Marvel Universe. Tom Holland is an amazing Spider-Man, people will love him. It was a very experimental process, placing him with the other actors, especially with Downey Jr., we had to learn as we worked. And we’re very happy with the final result.

Russo continues with mention of what looks to be a big hint that Tom Holland may wear the Iron Spider Armor costume that was used in the Civil War Marvel Comics comic book event as Russo says a costume that will be used will be produced by special effects.

We’re still working on a few things, like the costume. He’s not ready yet because so much will be produced with special effects.

Anthony Russo is directly asked about the Iron Spider Armor, but only seemingly teases its existence in the film.

SUPER: Will the film show the red-and-gold costume that was made famous in the Civil War comic?

AR: The film will show a mix of what everyone is waiting for with a little twist. So yeah, that’s all I can say.

With the use of numerous Spider-Man costumes in Captain America: Civil War, we can probably also safely speculate that Spider-Man may have a bigger role in the movie than the previously thought cameo.

Following Captain America: Civil War, Tom Holland will be featured in the standalone Spider-Man movie in 2017.

“Captain America: Civil War” has  a May 6, 2016 release date directed by Anthony and Joe Russo starring Chris Evans, Robert Downey Jr., Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner, Elizabeth Olsen, Sebastian Stan, Anthony Mackie, Frank Grillo, Paul Bettany, Don Cheadle, Emily VanCamp, William Hurt, Martin Freeman and Chadwick Boseman as Black Panther.

Sounds Like No Daredevil & Defenders For Avengers: Infinity War

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:23140:]]

Josh Brolin previously let it be known that it’s “Thanos against everyone” when it comes to The Avengers: Infinity War movies; however, that doesn’t look to include the Marvel Netflix Defenders, which consists of Daredevil, Luke Cage, Iron Fist and Jessica Jones.

Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Infinity War co-director Anthony Russo recently appeared at Comic-Con Experience in Brazil and offered “it’s complicated” when asked about Marvel Studios having a crossover with Marvel TV. Here’s the blurb (via Super Interessante):

It’s complicated. When we start to serialize the telling of stories it’s difficult. You have to have a lot of control and focus on the course of history. The films are controlled by a group led by Kevin Feige, so they function as a unit. Other products, even if they are from Marvel, are controlled by others. Then there is the possibility of a crossover, but it’s more complicated. It is a smaller scale version of the problem that exists when remembering that Fox holds the rights to some of Marvel’s most popular characters, as does Sony and others. As storytellers, we only have control over what happens in Marvel movies, but everything is possible, Spider-Man became possible!

The “complication” shouldn’t be too surprising as earlier it became known that Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige had parted ways with those who run Marvel TV, which includes Ike Perlmutter, Joe Quesada, Brian Michael Bendis and Jeph Loeb.

Marvel Comics Announces Civil War II

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:23133:]]

In conjunction with the release of the Captain America: Civil War movie, Marvel Comics has announced a new Civil War II event which will be written by Brian Michael Bendis with art by David Marquez.

The series hits in 2016.

Via Marvel.com:

“The fun thing about CIVIL WAR [was] that the issues involved not only divided the heroes, they also divided the fans, to say nothing of the creative people,” reflects Tom Brevoort, editor of both series. “The attempt was to craft the conflict so that each side held a valid and defensible position, so that a reader could fundamentally agree with either one side or the other, with neither being painted as absolutely right or absolutely wrong. While the issues involved are different, we’ll be taking the same approach to CIVIL WAR II.”

“CIVIL WAR was a seismic event that demanded the attention of existing fans and created new ones because it tapped into the most pressing question of its day,” adds Marvel Editor-in-Chief Axel Alonso. “CIVIL WAR II will do the same.”

“CIVIL WAR is rightly thought of by many as the landmark Marvel event and it’s a huge challenge to live up to the example set by Steve McNiven and [inker] Dexter Vines,” says Marquez. “Working on this book is a huge honor and an amazing opportunity to really push myself and show what I’m capable of artistically, and it’s also just great fun to get to pull out all the toys from the Marvel toy box!

“The creative team for CIVIL WAR set the bar for every following Marvel event, and I feel so lucky to be teamed up yet again with Brian Bendis and [colorist] Justin Ponsor. Having worked together over the past several years, first on MILES MORALES: ULTIMATE SPIDER-MAN and just recently on INVINCIBLE IRON MAN, We have really gelled as a team; it’s almost like we can finish each other’s’ sentences, creatively. Now we get to really show what we’re capable of on Marvel’s biggest stage and I can’t wait until everyone gets to see!”

“The original CIVIL WAR is one of the most important Marvel comics ever, and we are all very excited to have come up with what we hope is a story worthy of the title,” echoes Bendis. “If you are scared of earth shattering Marvel events where no one is safe…be afraid, be very afraid.”

New Batman Vs. Superman Trailer Falls Short In Viewings

While Marvel’s Captain America: Civil War trailer broke all kinds of records, WB’s second Batman Vs. Superman trailer actually sees a decline in viewings.

While it should be noted the Civil War trailer was the first for the movie, both Batman Vs. Superman full trailers together barley come near it.

Civil War netted 61 million views in its first 24 hours, with the latest Batman Vs. Superman trailer only seeing 23 million views, which is 7 million less than the first Dawn of Justice full teaser.

Variety does note this could be a natural decline, as it’s really the fourth teaser for BvS (a scene was released prior to the new trailer), but the Batman Vs. Superman trailer has been met with mixed reactions.

The trailer hasn’t been received all that favorably online – especially seeing how it seemingly reveals so much and fans aren’t happy with the look of whatever Zod becomes – as well as Eisenberg’s depiction of Luthor. It’s just never a good thing when the fan base is split in two, which is what happened with Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel, and we all know that movie started off strong, but ended with a whimper. Say what you want about Man of Steel, but following its huge opening there was talk of a Man of Steel sequel; however, the movie petered out only bringing in $660 million — and talk of a “Superman 2” was swept under the rug in favor of adding Batman.

My two cents regarding the look of whatever Zod becomes: It looks awful. The special effects are on par with what Singer did with Apocalypse. I certainly hope this isn’t “Doomsday,” as if it is, it takes a lot away from the character. Obviously, this “Doomsday” isn’t going to kill Superman. It’s such a waste of a character. I’m guessing we’ll be hearing shortly from Snyder on the topic who will say something along the lines of, “It’s my version, dude.” I’m hoping he actually comes out and says it’s not Doomsday. Maybe Bizarro? Eh, still looks terrible, guys.

Regarding Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor, it’s still a toss up for me. We do know that script was tweaked to accomodate using Jesse Eisenberg, and we can guess the original Goyer script used an older more typical comic book-inspired Lex Luthor. It’s my guess Luthor in the movie will eventually better resemble Lex we know from the comics, which will be represented by Lex losing his hair and going bald.

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:23129:]]

“Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” has a March 25, 2016 release starring Ben Affleck as Batman, Henry Cavill as Superman, Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman, Amy Adams as Lois Lane, Laurence Fishburne as Perry White, Diane Lane as Martha Kent, Jeremy Irons as Alfred, Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor, Ray Fisher as Cyborg with Callan Mulvey, Holly Hunter as Senator Finch and Tao Okamoto as Mercy Graves. Justice League is to follow directed by Zack Snyder as well.

Synopsis:

Fearing the actions of a god-like Super Hero left unchecked, Gotham City’s own formidable, forceful vigilante takes on Metropolis’s most revered, modern-day savior, while the world wrestles with what sort of hero it really needs. And with Batman and Superman at war with one another, a new threat quickly arises, putting mankind in greater danger than it’s ever known before.

Spider-Man Will Be Suited Up In Captain America: Civil War

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:23102:]]

We’ve known Tom Holland has filmed scenes for Captain America: Civil War, and we even have an idea of what one of the scenes involves.

Now it’s confirmed that Tom Holland will suit up as Spider-Man – not just Peter Parker – in Captain America: Civil War.

EW.com revealed new Captain America: Civil War images with the information that when they attended a set visit, they saw an actor dressed as Spider-Man of which both Marvel Studios president and producer Kevin Feige and Robert Downey Jr. seemingly confirmed.

“Listen, if there was a cosplayer running around that set when you were there, I don’t know what to tell you,” Feige said.

Robert Downey Jr. added:  “[Don] Cheadle and I are just going, ‘Wow, dude, look at this.’ We’re now like the old guard, and our storyline carries real weight just because of our history in the [canon]. But we’re also looking around like, ‘Who thought that Falcon and Black Panther and Ant-Man and now Spider-Man…?’ I mean it’s like wow, this thing is just crazy.”

However, Chris Evans was quick to note things could always change.

“You never know with Marvel,” Chris Evans said. “Sometimes they shoot things and then don’t use them.”

The articles continues specifically noting, “So, yes: Spider-Man is in Civil War,” which follows with director Joe Russo talking Tom Holland:

“We did two screen tests with the character. We were pretty vocal about who we wanted for the part,” Joe Russo offered about Holland. “He’s fantastic. Amazing. It’s like Christian Bale in Empire of the Sun. Rarely do you see a kid carry a movie like that. He’s also a dancer and a gymnast. He fits the part like you can’t believe. Another thing that we were really pushing for was to go young with the part. It’s the only way to differentiate it from what’s been done in the past. Get him as close as you can to the age that [the actor] is.”

EW.com revealed new images of Chadwick Boseman as the Black Panther for Captain America: Civil War.

“He’s definitely not the life of the party in this instance,” said Boseman. “I think this is something true of the comic book character and the movie. You never quite know where he stands. There’s always a bit of concealing and mystery. So I think mysterious is more his boat. Not to say there’s not charm and he can’t be a ladies’ man and all that. It’s more like if there is humor, it’s more like James Bond.”

“Captain America: Civil War” has  a May 6, 2016 release date directed by Anthony and Joe Russo starring Chris Evans, Robert Downey Jr., Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner, Elizabeth Olsen, Sebastian Stan, Anthony Mackie, Frank Grillo, Paul Bettany, Don Cheadle, Emily VanCamp, William Hurt, Martin Freeman and Chadwick Boseman as Black Panther.

Synopsis:

Captain America: Civil War picks up where Avengers: Age of Ultron left off, as Steve Rogers leads the new team of Avengers in their continued efforts to safeguard humanity. After another international incident involving the Avengers results in collateral damage, political pressure mounts to install a system of accountability and a governing body to determine when to enlist the services of the team. The new status quo fractures the Avengers while they try to protect the world from a new and nefarious villain.

Dan Slott Still At It: 24Hrs Bashing Batman Vs. Superman

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:23090:]]

We’re guessing the next issues of Spider-Man and Silver Surfer may be late, with the blaming lying with the Batman Vs. Superman footage released last night during Gotham.

Marvel Comics writer Dan Slott has spent the last 24 hours blasting the footage, Batman Vs. Superman, Zack Snyder, Man of Steel and Superman on Twitter (read Part 1 and Part 2).

Slott isn’t happy with Snyder’s portrayal of the Man of Steel as the writer feels it’s a “dark/grim/joyless Superman.” Slott goes on to defend his opinions stating, “From watching 2 trailers & all of MAN OF STEEL, my opinions are firmly based and far from ‘senseless.'” Slott even argues to ask Cap fans if they are happy with the character’s portrayal in the Marvel movies, and then to go ahead and ask if the Superman fans are happy with the Henry Cavill version. Slott argues Captain America: The First Avenger and The Avengers was “on point” for Cap, while Man of Steel was “FAR off point” for Superman.

Slott continues with mention if they switched directors he would be “less wary.”

Watch: Tom Holland Talks Playing Spider-Man

Check out Tom Holland above talking about Spider-Man as IGN caught up with the new Peter Parker for his latest movie, In The Heart of the Sea, which also features fellow Marvel star Chris Hemsworth.

On Chris Hemsworth:

“We have recently,” Holland said about talking with the Hemsworth about the MCU. “Obviously when we shot the film, I had no idea I was going to be given this opportunity, but I asked him what to expect. From working with him, I learned a lot about what it’s like to be Chris Hemsworth. The truth is, he is a pretty normal guy. He’s really hard-working. He’s really nice to be around. I think his work ethic really stands out. That’s something I need to make sure I maintain and don’t become complacent in any way.”

On Spider-Man:

“I mean it’s very daunting because obviously the first two guys were so great and they did such fantastic performances. So I’ve got quite a lot to follow. I think I’ll have the help from the rest of the Marvel Universe. What’s quite exciting is when you read these comics he’s in, he interacts with a lot of other super heroes. So I don’t know if they will – they might do it – but I love the idea of teaming up with other people and getting to work with some of the fantastic cast that are in this universe. But as of now, I know nothing. I just know one day in the near future I will be able to play Spider-Man, but as of now I don’t know much.”

What to expect:

“Hopefully great things, and I’m sure they will be good. The Marvel’s creative team are fantastic and really brilliant, and I am sure they are coming up with some pretty stellar stuff.”

Tom Holland will first be appearing in “Captain America: Civil War” this coming May followed by a new standalone Spider-Man movie.
