Russo Brothers Talk Avengers: Infinity War Characters & Spider-Man

We just heard from Joe and Anthony Russo in regards to Spider-Man in the Captain America: Civil, now check out what the directors have to say about The Avengers: Infinity War. Speaking with Forbes, the Russo’s menton Thanos, new characters and Spider-Man.

On whether Disney/Marvel requires certain characters for Avengers: Infinity War:

JR: Maybe there’s a character requirement but with things like Avengers: Infinity War that’s obvious because it’s a culmination of all the films in the phase that have preceded it. You know that Thanos is going to be in there and the majority of the Marvel Universe is going to appear in the movies. Those are givens, but after that we can construct any narrative we want around it and what we think is the best execution of the story.

On new characters appearing in Avengers: Infinity War:

AR: There are certain characters that you don’t know.

JR: New characters that are going to appear in Avengers: Infinity War. It’s a big sprawling ambitious movie, it’s about as ambitious as movies get and it should be, and the title alone indicates that there will be an incredible scape and scope to it.

On where they are at in regards to Avengers: Infinity War:

AR: It is intended to be the entire culmination of the Marvel cinematic universe and, in many ways, the end to that part of it. But we don’t even have the first draft in on that script yet; we’re still in the outline phase. It’s hard not to talk about it too specifically now only because of spoilers but also because we’re still figuring it out.

AR: We have an idea but let’s see if that evolves over the next couple of months.

Will Spider-Man appear in Avengers: Infinity War:

JR: To be determined. We’ll see.

“The Avengers: Infinity War – Part 1” has a May 4, 2018 release, with Part 2 on May 3, 2019.

Russo Brothers Talk Spider-Man In Captain America: Civil War & Costume

High-Res Spider-Man Image

Sony and Marvel recently debuted a peek at the new Tom Holland Spider-Man in the Captain America: Civil War trailer (watch below), Forbes caught up with directors Joe and Anthony Russo to get their take on fan feedback ranging from including Spider-Man into the movie as well as the trailer and reactions to the new costume.

On Spider-Man being included in the Captain America: Civil War trailer:

JR: We always intended to. He was my favorite character growing up, I still have my collection of comics in my closet so it was a dream come true for us to be able to have Spidey in the movie and interpret him as a character so we couldn’t be more excited and we wanted to share that with everybody else.

AR: Also I think it was a little bit of a correction because it was a very complicated deal that Sony had to work out with Marvel Studios and Disney in order to make that work. We were very quiet about Spider-Man’s involvement in the movie for much longer than we would have been. We were artificially silent on the character because it was such a sensitive business deal still being worked out even while we were shooting. We went through a very thorough casting process, we tested Tom Holland vigorously with Chris Evans and Robert Downey Jr,, we screen tested him along with several other actors, it was a very intense part of making Captain America: Civil War because he was an important part of the movie to us. Finally it’s all secure and we’re at a place where we can present him even in just a small taste.

JR: We thought it was a great way to reveal him. I think people are going to be happy with him in the movie, he’s got a very interesting role in it. I think they’ll be happy.

On Spider-Man being a part of Captain America: Civil War:

AR: I’ll say this, part of the fun of Spider-Man is that this film is basically a war amongst the Avengers and Spidey does not have the baggage that all these other characters have. He enters the story after the conflict that is happening between the Avengers and that gives him a very unique place in the story.

On Spider-Man’s costume:

JR: The design of the costume is what it is. That’s the design that we love, it’s the design that Kevin Feige loves and so on. He’s a very popular character so it’s always going to be controversial, people are always going to love or hate what you do with him, but all we can do is make sure that we love it, that we are true to ourselves and true to how we feel about the character and then hope that everybody else digs it.

AR: Part of issue is that we gave such a small impression of the character in that trailer, it’s something of a Rorschach test where people can pour as much of their Spidey anxieties out but when they see the movie they are going to get a very big picture of a very complete character that they have never seen before. It’s kind of hard to react to people’s reactions but they will change radically when they see the movie.

JR: And there is still effects work that needs to be done on it.

We like making strong choices with characters so while this might be a slightly more traditional, Steve Ditko influenced suit, it is certainly in our vocabulary to develop it into something more extreme as the storytelling requires. I think there are things that people will discover when they see the film about why the suit operate the way it does, why the eyes move, all that stuff is substantiated. Everybody wants the answers yesterday but then what would be the point of seeing the movie?

On the possibility of too many versions of Spider-Man in recent years:

JR: There are pros and cons without question; there is the fatigue factor that comes with it. I’m a skeptical fan and I would look at the multiple version and I would even go, ‘Guys, give me a break. Let me wash my palette clean of whatever the last interpretation was because you’re exhausting me!’ However, there are a couple of key factors here. One of them is that he’s back in the Marvel Universe, he’s interacting with characters that you’ve never seen him interact before, it’s actually a young actor playing the part which is a new interpretation of the character and that’s what I remember about the character when I was a kid. The cons are obviously fatigue but the pros are that it could potentially be a really invigorating piece of story telling and a catalyzing interpretation of the character. At the end of the day, the purpose here is to deliver a Spider-Man that people will **** themselves over.

Robert Downey Jr. Doesn’t Think Iron Man 4 Will Happen

It doesn’t sounds as if Iron Man 4 is going to happen any time soon, if at all.

USA Today visited the set of Captain America: Civil War where the subject of Iron Man 4 came up while talking with Robert Downey Jr.

It’s noted that Robert Downey Jr. thinks Iron Man 4 would be great, but the actor, who will be making his seventh appearance in a Marvel movie this May, offered, “I don’t think that’s in the cards.”

Robert Downey Jr. says his Iron Man 4 is Captain America: Civil War.

“In a way it’s Cap 3 but for me it’s like my little Iron Man 4 and then it’s back to the thing we all recognize,” Downey said. “Everything pulls over to the side of the road when the thunder of an Avengers thing comes through because that’s how it is until it changes. If it changes.”

Interestingly enough, while discussing if Tony Stark is the bad guy in Civil War, Robert Downey Jr. mentions he thinks that if they ever did a final Iron Man movie for him, he should be featured as the villain.

“If we’re going to go there, then we’ve got to save it for my swan song,” Downey said, while adding in Civil War he isn’t all that bad. “I would still like to keep a general audience and mildly be in their favor somehow.”

Robert Downey Jr. is expected back as Iron Man for The Avengers: Infinity War movies.

“Captain America: Civil War” has  a May 6, 2016 release date directed by Anthony and Joe Russo starring Chris Evans, Robert Downey Jr., Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner, Elizabeth Olsen, Sebastian Stan, Anthony Mackie, Frank Grillo, Paul Bettany, Don Cheadle, Emily VanCamp, William Hurt, Martin Freeman and Chadwick Boseman as Black Panther.

James Gunn Doesn’t Deny Sylvester Stallone Guardians of the Galaxy 2 Rumor

The past week or so has seen rumors hit the net regarding Sylvester Stallone being involved with Guardians of the Galaxy 2.

The first rumor stated Sly was going cosmic when he allegedly was spotted at the same Atlanta hotel the cast of GOTG 2 is staying at, and it was also said Stallone was seen with the script and used the same car as Chris Pratt.

Following that, a second rumor hit the net suggesting Sylvester Stallone is playing a member of the Nova Corps, as it’s said he was spotted wearing what resembles a Judge Dredd costume.

We know James Gunn is big on social media and loves to read all about his Guardians of the Galaxy movie (ha ha). A few days ago saw Gunn comment on rumors surrounding the film. Though he made no mention of Stallone – Gunn says he isn’t commenting on rumors anymore – he neither denies nor confirms the rumor, but does offer a cryptic response via Facebook.

Sometimes rumors around ‪#‎GotGVol2‬ turn up that are batshit crazy. Other times rumors turn up that are batshit crazy AND untrue. Unfortunately, you’ll just have to wait a while to find out which ones are which. I’m done spoiling the fun.

Back to shooting a scene with Man-Thing and Chris Pratt.*

*All right, that one’s untrue. For now…

The post also saw Gunn answer a few fan questions:

Better to debunk rumours or to have fun with them?

As I announced a couple months ago, I will ignore all of them.

Hey James what would be the likelyhood of a symbiote showing up in a future Guardians/cosmic Marvel film?

As of now very unlikely.

Hey Mr Gunn when you saw Civil War did you offer any suggestions/improvements? Or was the movie done the best it could already?

I offered suggestions, but mostly just told them what I thought worked and the (very little) that didn’t work.

If asked would you ever direct a episode of The Walking Dead

Nope. There’s no current TV show I’d direct.

Are any of these rumours ever started by yourself or the cast?!

No.

“Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” has a May 5, 2017 release starring Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Karen Gillan, Bradley Cooper, Vin Diesel, Michael Rooker and Sean Gunn. New cast members include Pom Klementieff, Elizabeth Debicki, Chris Sullivan and Kurt Russell.

Big Captain America: Civil War Spoiler Everyone Missed; Star Wars Easter Egg Revealed

Spoilers follow for Captain America: Civil War.

While everyone has been focused on Spider-Man in the new Captain America: Civil War trailer, a really BIG spoiler is also featured in the footage.

We’ve all seen the epic battle between Cap, Bucky and Iron Man from the previous trailer (watch a slow-mo version below). This trailer gives us a bit more footage from the battle and a MAJOR SPOILER.

An eagle-eyed user on the iMDB forums (via reddit) apparently used a video edit program to enhance the Captain America: Civil War footage of the fight between Captain America and Iron Man. If you take a close look, you see The Winter Soldier lying on the ground — minus his bionic arm!

Obviously we can speculate from the image that Iron Man rips off Bucky’s arm, but perhaps the bigger question is whether or not The Winter Soldier survives!

As Mad_Rascal notes, it look as if Feige is “carrying on the tradition of cutting off someone’s arm as a nod to Star Wars.” All the latest Marvel movies feature someone getting their arm/hand cut off in some way or another, which is a homage to Luke and Darth Vader in Empire Strikes Back.

For a batch of more Easter Eggs from the Civil War trailer (including Spider-Man), check out a cool video here.

Spider-Man’s Squinty Eyes Possibly Explained!

Smile!

O ye, of little faith!

Yeah, that applies to yours truly and my other cohorts and Cosmic Book News!

Earlier today, I wrote up an article how we weren’t too thrilled with the look of the new Marvel Tom Holland Spider-Man costume revealed in the Captain America: Civil War trailer (watch below), which quickly went viral (see the below Facebook post). My main gripe was the movement of Spider-Man’s eyes, as I felt it came off too cartoonish and didn’t make a lot of sense.

However, now a rather possible fathomable explanation has been pointed out to me that, if true, is actually really cool.

DC Comics and Marvel artist Brad Walker pointed out on his Twitter that the squinty eyes of Spider-Man could be — camera lenses! So it’s possible what we see in the trailer is Spider-Man actually snapping photographs of The Avengers in action! Fans of Spider-Man will recall that Peter used to have a belt camera, and we do see this version of the costume is spot on with the comics, so Marvel Studios may simply have given Spidey a more contemporary upgrade. Makes a lot of sense. It’s also been pointed out by a few of you that this Spider-Man costume could be an early version created by Peter with further upgrades to come.

I suppose we have Nolan to blame for our ultra-realistic snobby opinions!

Update: Check out a cool fan manip below of what Spider-Man’s eyes might look like with the lenses fully open.

We’re hoping they improve on the new Spider-Man costume–> http://on.cbnws.cc/226wvz8

We’re Not Sold On The New Marvel Spider-Man Costume

High-Res Spider-Man Image

I like to think we here at Cosmic Book News hold ourselves to a higher standard than other sites or even some fans out there. Just because something might be “so and so” doesn’t necessarily mean we – or anyone – should accept it or be happy with it. When you start to accept second best – or worse – don’t be surprised if that’s all you get.

That’s why we continue to battle Marvel Comics over their “Cosmic” line — even though that is how our site was created and started (Nova and Guardians of the Galaxy).

I’m also pretty happy with the fact we gave Star Wars: The Force Awakens a negative review. Checking out some reviews and comments online, they act like it was the next best thing since sliced bread. Funny. The same was said about Phantom Menace when it debuted.

Now we have Spider-Man.

Marvel and Sony recently gave us a first look at the new Tom Holland Spider-Man in the Captain America: Civil War trailer (watch below). I suppose it’s safe to say the CGI/special effects (?) aren’t yet finished with the new Spidey, but my overall impression is that I am not too impressed with the costume. It’s way too bright and cartoonish. I was also left wondering what was up with the movement in Spidey’s eyes? We just saw Deadpool do that, but as DP breaks the fourth wall, it can slide. I actually thought I was watching an animated version of the new Spider-Man in the trailer. Didn’t they use a real actor (Holland?) in the scene, or is it totally digital? It came off more as the latter than anything practical.

Update: A cool explanation for Spidey’s squinty eyes has surfaced.

I also asked CBN’s very own Chris “Doc” Bushley about Spider-Man. Chris’ first impression? Remember Spider-Man in the Electric Company? Yep. Chris did point out in the new comics, Spider-Man’s costume is almost like nanotech and can cover his body, which has a power source in his chest similar to Iron Man. Perhaps that explains how Spider-Man’s mask can move with his expressions (I suppose)?

Spider-Man From The Electric Company

I also asked our movie reviewer Lawrence Napoli about his thoughts. Lawrence wasn’t impressed as well. Lawrence says he was excited by the surprise, but instantly over it and somewhat underwhelmed by Spidey.

Brian Amey, who has written for us in the past, did offer up he liked the look and said the CGI is definitely unfinished. Brian did state it currently looks very flat and offers it will be intersting to see that the final version looks like.

As noted, this may not be the final look of the new Spider-Man costume, but we just want the best possible version. Admittedly, taking a close look at the high-res pic, the Spider-Man costume doesn’t look all that bad. For a quick comparison, here is the Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire Spider-Man costumes followed by the Tom Holland:

Team Iron Man Comments On Captain America: Civil War

We just heard what Team Cap had to say, now check out comments from Team Iron Man about Captain America: Civil War.

Team Cap posters and 22 high-res pics have also been released.

Robert Downey Jr.:

“People are much less capable of processing things than they think and we’re kind of simple and dumb. And for a guy who is fast, he’s definitely on the verge of practically getting over himself,” says Downey of Stark, decked out in business attire rather than his Iron Man suit on this May day of filming in Atlanta. “I almost feel like sometimes he’s some (old man) who goes back to the neighborhood and goes, ‘Kids, it doesn’t have to be like this.’ ”

“Regardless of whose argument is what, communication is about really being able to fully see the other person’s point of view,” he says. “I fully see Cap’s point of view — I don’t know if Tony does.”

Don Cheadle:

“Obviously, I can’t do anything that violates my oath but at the same time we’re dealing with things that haven’t ever been in the playbook.”

Paul Bettany:

“The stronger you are, the more you invite challenge. Something has to rise to fill the vacuum.”

Scarlett Johansson:

“Either we’re going to fight it and lose or we’re going to go with it and make it work,” Johansson says. “Regimes come and go but we have to pat the backs this time and shake hands and play nice.”

Chadwick Boseman:

“He’s definitely his own guy,” Boseman says. “There’s no ‘I’m going to do whatever you say because you’re the leader of this team.’ That’s not who he is. But I would say that’s also true of other characters.”

Team Cap Comments On Captain America: Civil War

In addition to the Team Cap posters and 22 high-res images, check out what Chris Evans, Anthony Mackie, Jeremy Renner, Elizabeth Olsen and Sebastian Stan had to say about Captain America: Civil War below.

Update: Team Iron Man comments on Civil War.

Chris Evans:

“I love when he gets to have conflic. There’s a lot of struggle for him to try and keep whatever sense of family he has.”

“It’s boring when a good guy knows how to be a good guy. It’s much more dynamic when a good guy isn’t sure what the good guy move is and has to debate another point of view from someone who may be very close to him.”

Anthony Mackie:

“He respects and admires Cap because Cap earned his rank as opposed to sitting in an office and just delegating orders.”

Jeremy Renner:

“Cap was the first guy who called. Let’s just get the job done so I can get home to the family.”

Elizabeth Olsen:

She’s “figuring out her place and finding a family,” says Olsen, but “she does have a few changes of points of view in this film.”

Sebastian Stan:

“Cap is his only shot at survival,” Stan says, adding that Bucky’s new teammates aren’t completely sold on him. “It’s not like everyone’s high-fiving before going to war. There are still tensions.”
