As excitement builds for the trailer release of Superman, rumors of reshoots recently surfaced, sparking concern among fans, which follows it known that two screen tests have been held. However, DC Studios co-head James Gunn quickly addressed the confusion, clarifying that the additional filming is standard practice and not cause for alarm.
What Sparked the Confusion?
The speculation began after a report from The Hollywood Reporter suggested that Superman would undergo a few days of additional filming in Los Angeles. Some fans took this to mean full-scale reshoots were underway, raising concerns about potential issues with the film.
James Gunn Clears the Air
Gunn addressed the rumors directly on Threads when asked by a fan if the report about Superman reshoots was true:
“Sort of. Not a few days. We’re doing a day and a half of pickup shots.”
He further explained that these pickups do not involve redoing scenes:
“No scenes. No reshoots. Just a handful of individual shots to enhance the film.”
Gunn also noted that this process is a regular part of his filmmaking approach:
“I’ve done it on every movie except The Suicide Squad—I would have done it on that too if not for Covid.”
What Are Pickup Shots?
Pickup shots, unlike full reshoots, involve capturing small, specific moments to refine or enhance existing scenes. This could include improving continuity, adding reaction shots, or fixing minor details. Gunn’s explanation assures fans that these adjustments are routine and not indicative of larger issues with the film.
Should fans worry?
While reshoots often carry a negative stigma (see below), from the sound of it, Gunn has everything under control.
As of late, typically when fans hear the dreaded “reshoot” word it means big trouble. Case in point it has been said Marvel’s Captain America: Brave New World has undergone at least four reshoots sending its budget to Mars. Obviously, that’s not such a good thing as it means there likely are major problems with the movie.
Superman gets released in theaters on July 11, 2025 starring David Corenswet, Rachel Brosnahan, and Nicholas Hoult. The trailer is expected around Christmas.
