James Gunn shares a behind-the-scenes look at the Superman: Legacy cast which includes new Man of Steel David Corenswet, a bald Nicholas Hoult who plays Lex Luthor, and more.
Gunn recently held a table read for the film in Atlanta prepping for filming which is said to start next month.
“After the table read with the Superman cast. Eve, Mr. Terrific, Superman/Clark, Otis, Lex, producer Peter Safran, Jimmy, Metamorpho, Lois, Hawkgirl, me, Guy, The Engineer all together for the first time! What a wonderful day,” posted Gunn on social media.
The stellar cast of Superman: Legacy includes David Corenswet as Clark Kent and Superman, and Rachel Brosnahan is playing Lois Lane. Isabela Merced is Hawkgirl, Nathan Fillion is Green Lantern Guy Gardner, and Edi Gathegi is playing Mister Terrific. María Gabriela de Faría is playing The Engineer from The Authority described as a “villain,” with Anthony Carrigan cast as Metamorpho. Skyler Gisondo is Jimmy Olsen, and Sara Sampaio is Eve Teschmacher. Nicholas Hoult is Lex Luthor. Sean Gunn is also playing Maxwell Lord in the DCU, though it’s not clear at this time if he will be in Superman: Legacy. It’s also rumored Supergirl will be in the film who is being played by Milly Alcock.
What is Superman: Legacy about?
DC officially describes Superman: Legacy as telling the story of Superman’s journey to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing as Clark Kent of Smallville, Kansas. He is the embodiment of truth, justice, and the American way, guided by human kindness in a world that sees kindness as old-fashioned.
James Gunn also described David Corenswet’s version of the Man of Steel as a “big galoot.”
“He’s a big ol’ galoot. He’s a farmboy from Kansas who’s very idealistic. His greatest weakness is that he’ll never kill anybody,” Gunn said. “He doesn’t want to hurt a living soul. I like that sort of innate goodness about Superman; it’s his defining characteristic. He’s not ‘All-Star Superman,’ but again, I’m a huge fan of ‘All-Star Superman,’ and I’m very inspired by [that series].”
Rachel Brosnahan has described her Lois as “fearless.”
“She saves Superman. She’s the brains; she’s actually the fearless one,” she said adding in a separate interview, “We’ve been having a lot of great conversations, David and I, with James Gunn, the director,” Brosnahan told Extra. “We’ve been talking a lot about where this project fits into the canon of the Supermans that we know. So hopefully, this will be… we’ll be putting our own stamp on things.”
Superman: Legacy flies into theaters on July 11, 2025.
