The newly released Supergirl teaser trailer is already facing heavier pushback on YouTube, racking up more dislikes in 24 hours than the Superman trailer has accumulated over six months.
The Supergirl trailer is receiving massive backlash due to its portrayal of the main character, Krypto peeing on Superman, comparisons to Guardians of the Galaxy, and they even drastically changed the look of the villain.
YouTube Numbers Tell a Different Story
As of one day after release, the Supergirl teaser sits at roughly 29,000 dislikes at 9.5 million views, while the Superman trailer released in May has accumulated about 21,000 dislikes over six months and 36 million views.
If the ratio holds, when Supergirl gets the same number of views, its dislikes will be well over 100,000.
While both videos have strong view counts, the engagement gap stands out.
Reaction From Fans
The release of the Supergirl trailer triggered immediate backlash across social media, with critics accusing the film of leaning too heavily on James Gunn’s familiar Guardians of the Galaxy style.
Many viewers labeled the trailer a rehash, comparing Milly Alcock’s Kara Zor-El to a “female Star-Lord,” citing the trenchcoat look, Walkman, and cynical attitude reflected in the tagline “Truth. Justice. Whatever.”
On X and Reddit, detractors described the tone as bleak and cynical, arguing it stripped the character of the hopeful spirit traditionally associated with Supergirl.
Some reactions also criticized the film’s muted color palette, calling it visually dull and oppressive, and claimed the tone drifted too far from the energy of Woman of Tomorrow.
The early metrics suggest Supergirl is provoking a stronger immediate response than Superman did at the same stage, and it doesn’t appear to be good.
