Gunn Pushes for “F’n Awesome” Batman as Questions Grow Around His DC Plans

James Gunn told Bloomberg that “If you’re gonna make a Batman movie, it better be f—ing awesome,” a bold statement considering his track record leans heavily toward quirky, comedic and goofy projects — Creature Commandos, Peacemaker, Superman, The Suicide Squad, and his entire Guardians run at Marvel.

Fans have already expressed concern about the idea of a “goofy Gunn Batman,” complete with the kind of needle-drop playlists and goofy tone Gunn is known for.

And the timing of his comment raises more questions than confidence.

Brave and the Bold in Limbo

Director Andy Muschietti recently said he isn’t allowed to talk about Batman until a “couple of months,” which appears to be a sign that The Brave and the Bold may no longer be solidly on the table.

With Netflix buying WBD, the future of Batman — and who controls the character — may shift entirely to the new owners.

Netflix Highlights Reeves’ Batman Universe, Not Gunn’s

Adding to the uncertainty: Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos just highlighted The Penguin series as the example of where DC storytelling works. He made no mention of Gunn, the DCU, Creature Commandos, or Peacemaker.

Interestingly enough, Matt Reeves was up to take over DC when Christopher Nolan chose Zack Snyder.

With Muschietti sidelined, Sarandos praising the Reeves corner of DC, and Gunn publicly selling his Batman philosophy, the message is clear: the next Batman direction likely won’t be Gunn’s call.

And does anyone really think Gunn is going to make a “f’n awesome” Batman?
