Despite all the negative reviews, David Ayer’s Suicide Squad has netted the August record-breaking opening for Thursday night previews with $20.5 million, which shatters the previous record held by James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy back in 2014 with $11.3 million.
Guardians of the Galaxy went on to make $94.3 million for its opening weekend, the current August weekend record, and Suicide Squad is said to be on track to beat that as well, as estimates have Suicide Squad any where from $115 million to $145 million.
Regarding the negative ratings, Suicide Squad is now rated lower than Batman Vs. Superman. Suicide Squad is listed by the movie review aggregate site at 26%; Batman Vs. Superman finished with 27%.
The two main issues with Suicide Squad that I’ve run into online seem to be not enough Joker and the poor choice for the villain. Regarding the former, Jared Leto did let it be known that a lot of Joker scenes were cut from the movie.
David Ayer did say the version in theaters is his cut of the movie, so it’s unlikely an extended Ultimate Cut will be released, but you never know.
Suicide Squad is also doing well over seas with a current $29.6 million.
“Suicide Squad” has an August 5, 2016 release date directed by David Ayer starring Will Smith as Deadshot, Jared Leto as the Joker, Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, Cara Delevingne as Enchantress, Jai Courtney as Boomerang, Joel Kinnaman as Rick Flag, Viola Davis as Amanda Waller, Adam Beach as Slipknot, Karen Fukuhara as Katana, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje as Killer Croc, Jay Hernandez as El Diablo, and Scott Eastwood in an unknown role.
It feels good to be bad… Assemble a team of the world’s most dangerous, incarcerated Supervillains, provide them with the most powerful arsenal at the government’s disposal, and send them off on a mission to defeat an enigmatic, insuperable entity. U.S. intelligence officer Amanda Waller has determined only a secretly convened group of disparate, despicable individuals with next to nothing to lose will do. However, once they realize they weren’t picked to succeed but chosen for their patent culpability when they inevitably fail, will the Suicide Squad resolve to die trying, or decide it’s every man for himself?
