Lucasfilm has announced that Star Wars: Starfighter, directed by Shawn Levy, has officially gone into production in the U.K.
The new film is a standalone adventure that tells an original story in a period of the galaxy not yet explored in Star Wars.
Theatrical release is set for May 28, 2027.
The Cast
Ryan Gosling leads the cast, joined by Flynn Gray, Matt Smith, Mia Goth, Aaron Pierre, Simon Bird, Jamael Westman, Daniel Ings, and Amy Adams.
Goth and Smith are said to be playing villains, while Gray has landed a breakout role after months of casting searches. Amy Adams is reported to be playing the mother of Gray’s character.
Story and Setting
Star Wars: Starfighter takes place about five years after the events of The Rise of Skywalker.
While Lucasfilm has not revealed official plot details, reports suggest Gosling’s character protects a young charge across a galaxy-spanning adventure.
Levy’s film is not tied to the Skywalker Saga and instead introduces new characters and conflicts.

Shawn Levy expressed his enthusiasm in a statement.
“I feel a profound sense of excitement and honor as we begin production on Star Wars: Starfighter,” said the filmmaker. “From the day Kathy Kennedy called me up, inviting me to develop an original adventure in this incredible Star Wars galaxy, this experience has been a dream come true, creatively and personally. Levy also produces alongside Kathleen Kennedy, with Ryan Gosling, Dan Levine, Mary McLaglen, and Josh McLaglen serving as executive producers. Jonathan Tropper wrote the script.
Release Date
Star Wars: Starfighter opens exclusively in theaters on May 28, 2027.
