The Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker title is officially revealed for Episode IX as Stephen Colbert took to the stage in Chicago along with LucasFilm’s Kathleen Kennedy, director J.J. Abrams and members of the cast which showed off the first footage and trailer.
The panel kicked off with a sizzle reel that featured the first footage (see images below) and J.J. Abrams also revealed concept art in addition to character pics.
“We’re here today to talk about Episode 9, the movie that completes the Skywalker saga, so let’s get this thing started…” Colbert says.
“George was saying this is the third act of a third act structure. It is. That is exactly what it is. We’ve immersed ourselves in everything George created and talked about it immensely and we’re so excited because I think what you are going to end up seeing you will be so happy with. We are incredibly excited to show it to you,” says Kathleen Kennedy.
“This movie is about the new generation and what they inherited, The Light and The Dark, and answer the question as they face the greatest evil, are they prepared? Are they ready? It’s been really incredible to look at this thing that George created and to bring it to a close in this way about this new generation,” Abrams offers. “The movie doesn’t pick up immediately after the last film, some time has gone by. What I’ll say about this movie is, you can tell by that picture, that this is an adventure the group goes on together.”
“The original group is going on this epic, epic journey together,” adds Naomi Ackie who plays Jannah who hints her character’s father is Lando Calrissian. “Listen. Lando is a very charming man, so he could have children all over the galaxy. That’s all I’m saying. Am I right [laughs].”
“The lightsaber that Rey inherited from Luke lives,” Daisey Ridley replies when asked about if her lightsaber is destroyed or if she starts anew.
The panel finished with the Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker trailer revealing the title. Watch at the end of the live feed below!
