What do the reviews say?

The reviews for Disney’s Snow White are sharply divided, with a clear mix of praise and criticism.

The Good

On the positive side, many critics highlight Rachel Zegler’s performance as the film’s standout element, praising her strong vocals, charisma, and screen presence. Some reviewers found the movie to be a fresh and visually engaging update, applauding its modern themes, colorful visuals, and the addition of new music by Pasek and Paul. A handful even called it one of the better Disney live-action remakes, noting that it offers enough charm and heart to appeal to family audiences.

The bad

However, a large portion of critics were far less impressed. Many described the film as bland, confused, and lacking the magic of the original 1937 classic. The CGI, lighting, and set design were frequently called out as cheap or awkward, with several reviewers criticizing the “cartoonized” dwarves and overall artificial look. The script and storytelling were also widely panned for being shallow, unimaginative, and overly safe. Critics accused the movie of feeling like a cynical, unnecessary remake that does little to justify its existence.

Gal Gadot’s performance as the Evil Queen was especially polarizing, with some calling it ineffective or even cringeworthy. Ultimately, while a few found the film pleasant or passable, the consensus leans toward disappointment, with many suggesting that Disney’s latest reimagining fails to capture what made the original special.

Here is a selection of the negative reviews from Top Critics:

  • There’s nothing magical in Marc Webb’s movie, but it nevertheless feels uncanny; spending $250 million to make a film in which absolutely nothing works is a kind of dark art in and of itself. – Toronto Star
  • The timeless classic, a groundbreaking achievement for animation, has been turned into another pointless and awkward live-action automaton that vanishes from your mind the second it’s over. – NY Post
  • At the end of the day, the best parts of Snow White are the parts that feel genuinely real and authentic. If only there were more of those, and less screen time spent dancing in the realm of mind-breaking absurdity. – Consequence
  • Decades from now, will anyone remember what Disney was even attempting to do here? Probably not, but I’ll bet the 1937 original will still hold up. -Newsday
