Sharknado Returns as ‘Sharknado Origins’ Heads Into Production

The most infamous B-movie franchise of the last decade is coming back swinging. Variety reports that Sharknado is officially returning with a seventh installment titled Sharknado Origins, bringing killer sharks and tornado mayhem back to the screen after a seven-year break.

The Asylum is gearing up to start production later this year with original director Anthony Ferrante returning. Casting hasn’t been announced yet, but the plan is to release the film in summer 2026.

A Prequel With Teen Fin and April

As the title gives away, Sharknado Origins takes place before the 2013 Syfy movie that turned into a global pop-culture phenomenon. The film introduces audiences to a teenage Fin and April, originally played across six movies by Ian Ziering and Tara Reid.

The setup follows the pair during a picture-perfect beach summer where they meet, flirt, and fall into young love. But just as Fin is ready to offer a promise ring, the weather changes, a massive funnel cloud forms offshore, and sharks explode out of the water. It marks the birth of the very first Sharknado — and according to the studio, “nothing says young love like airborne predators.”

The Legacy of a B-Movie Sensation

The original Sharknado was made for just $1 million and became a surprise cultural event thanks to its ridiculous premise and a social-media frenzy. It generated five sequels, multiple spinoffs, and a long list of celebrity cameos from names like Olivia Newton-John, Al Roker, Billy Ray Cyrus, Jerry Springer, Ann Coulter, Jackie Collins, George R.R. Martin, and David Hasselhoff.

The franchise peaked with Sharknado 2, pulling in nearly 4 million viewers on Syfy and cementing its reputation as the king of campy disaster movies. The Last Sharknado arrived in 2018 and was billed as the end… until now.
