The fallout from Christy’s disappointing opening weekend box office continues, and this time, LGBQT+ actress Ruby Rose is firing shots directly at Sydney Sweeney.
Ruby Rose Slams Sweeney Over Christy
Following the film’s weak $1.3 million debut across 2,011 theaters, the Batwoman star took to Threads to blame Sweeney for the biopic’s failure.
Rose said she was originally attached to play real-life boxer Christy Martin in an earlier version of the project and accused Sweeney of ruining the movie’s integrity:
“The original Christy Martin script was incredible. Life changing. I was attached to play Cherry. Everyone had experience with the core material. Most of us were actually gay. It’s part of why I stayed in acting. Losing roles happens all the time.”
Rose went on to attack Sweeney’s recent comments about making the movie “for the people,” saying:
“None of ‘the people’ want to see someone who hates them, parading around pretending to be us. You’re a cretin and you ruined the film. Period. Christy deserved better.”

Shortly after, Rose walked back the use of “cretin” — saying she didn’t realize it was considered ableist — and replaced it with a sharper insult:
“F***! Cretin is an ableist term? I thought it meant creature in old English. I regret writing that and should have just said psychopath.”

Christy’s Box Office Struggles
Directed by David Michôd and distributed by Black Bear, Christy marked the studio’s first wide release but failed to connect with audiences after premiering at TIFF in September.
The film stars and is produced by Sweeney, who plays boxing legend Christy Martin. Despite the poor turnout, Sweeney defended the project on Instagram, calling it the “most impactful” work of her career and emphasizing its message of “survival, courage, and hope”:
“We don’t always just make art for numbers, we make it for impact. If Christy gave even one woman the courage to take her first step toward safety, then we will have succeeded.”

Controversy Around Sweeney
The criticism from Rose comes amid continued backlash over Sweeney’s American Eagle ad and support for President Donald Trump. In a recent GQ interview, Sweeney dismissed the controversy, saying, “I think that when I have an issue that I want to speak about, people will hear.”
Reportedly, Sweeney’s politics are also clashing with her fellow Euphoria star, Zendaya.
