A Quantum Leap reboot is in the works at NBC as a pilot has been given an order by the network.
The new Quantum Leap will be a follow-up series set in the present time where it has been 30 years since Dr. Sam Beckett (played by Scott Bakula) stepped into the Quantum Leap accelerator and vanished; now a new team has been assembled to restart the project in the hopes of understanding the mysteries behind the machine and the man who created it.
While Scott Bakula has previously talked about a reboot, presently it’s said the actor only had conversations about potentially getting involved.
Bakula’s co-star, Dean Stockwell, recently passed away who played Admiral Al Calavicci, the hologram guiding Sam through his weekly time travel adventures.
Back in September Bakula mentioned there were conversations about a new Quantum Leap project.
“There are very significant conversations about it right now going on. I don’t know what it would be. I don’t know who would have it. The rights were a mess for years. I don’t know if they’re even sorted out now. That’s always been the biggest complication,” Bakula told the late Bob Saget.
Details for the new Quantum Leap include it is being written and executive produced by La Brea co-showrunners Steven Lilien and Bryan Wynbrandt who have also worked on God Friended Me, Gotham, the Hawaii Five-0 reboot, CSI: NY, and Alcatraz, and executive producers include by Blindspot creator Martin Gero as well as Quantum Leap creator/EP Don Bellisario and EP/co-narrator Deborah Pratt.
Quantum Leap aired for 97 episodes
The original show ran for five seasons with 97 episodes from March of 1989 to May of 1993.
The final episode saw the time-traveling Sam Beckett offered the chance to leap home, but instead, Sam chose to continue leaping, which left fans wanting to know what happened, so maybe that is something that could be answered in the reboot.
Bakula also previously revealed that Donald P. Bellisario talked about a return over the years but it was always with Sam and Al in mind.
“[Bellisario] would always say, ‘I can’t write it without thinking of you and Dean,’” said Bakula who would always respond, “Just think about me and Dean and write your show. Get it out there. If you have an idea, just write it. I am sure it will be great.”
