Matt Smith has been cast in Sony’s Morbius the Living Vampire movie that stars Jared Leto as the titular character.
The details surrounding Smith’s role are being kept under wraps, but the role is said to be a major one. Matt Smith is known for playing Doctor Who and is rumored for a role in Disney and J.J. Abrams’ upcoming Star Wars: Episode IX.
Adria Arjona has also been said to be in talks to play the female lead of the Morbius movie with Martine Bancroft, who in the comics is the ex-fiancee of Michael Morbius who also goes on to become a vampire of her own.
In the comics, Dr. Michael Morbius has a rare and fatal blood disease, and when he attempts to find a cure becomes Morbius the Living Vampire and has run-ins with Spider-Man. However, similar to the Venom movie it is not expected that Morbius will feature Tom Holland or Spider-Man.
Morbius has no release date but looks to start filming soon with Daniel Espinosa (Life, Safe House) directing; Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless (Netflix series Lost in Space) wrote the script; Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach are producing with Lucas Foster; Palak Patel will oversee the pic for Sony.
The film is the next in line in Sony’s planned Spider-Man spinoff universe, with Tom Hardy kicking things off with the blockbuster Venom movie that has made over $855 million worldwide.
