Marvel Going Cheap With X-Men Reboot, Looking to Cast Unknowns

Marvel’s upcoming X-Men reboot apparently won’t feature any major stars, at least those that make up Professor Xavier’s students at the school for gifted mutants.

Marvel Looking to “Keep the Cost Down”

According to Variety, Marvel has informed reps it’s looking for “younger talent, rather than A-listers” in order to “keep the cost down,” per one Hollywood agent. That confirms what Kevin Feige has hinted at — the reboot will skew younger — but the financial motivation now appears to be the driving factor.

Casting is expected to begin soon, with the field “wide open,” according to Variety, meaning just about anyone could land a role.

“They have been a place to tell stories about young people who feel different and who feel Other and who feel like they don’t belong,” Feige said about the MCU’s X-Men in a recent round table press interview. “That’s the universal story of mutants, and that is where we’re going.”

A-list talent out?

If Feige is indeed going with unknowns and younger talent for the X-Men, that likely means all those recent casting rumors could be false.

Rumors have offered a variety of actors’ names including Emma Stone, Timothée Chalamet, Saoirse Ronan, and even Elliot Page and Hunter Schafer, with Jenna Ortega and more.

X-Men Reboot Still in Early Stages

Jake Schreier (Thunderbolts) is directing, and Marvel is still “fine-tuning” the script by Michael Lesslie (The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes).

Variety also notes that Marvel is holding July 23, 2027, for a mystery film, but says X-Men won’t be filling that date.
