New 'Mandalorian & Grogu' Details Reveal Din Djarin’s New Role in the Galaxy

A new look at The Mandalorian and Grogu has arrived via Empire, offering fresh details about where Din Djarin and Grogu stand as they head into their first theatrical Star Wars film.

The movie hits theaters May 22, 2026, and continues their story after the events of Season 3.

Din Djarin’s Mission Has Shifted

Jon Favreau explains to Empire that Din isn’t the same lone mercenary audiences met years ago. After finding Grogu, defying his code, fighting the Imperial remnant, and helping Bo-Katan reclaim Mandalore, his priorities have changed. Favreau points back to the end of Season 3, when Din said he wanted to work for the “good guys” instead of operating as a hired gun.

That shift now takes him straight into the New Republic’s efforts to stabilize the galaxy. In the film, Din receives assignments from Sigourney Weaver’s Colonel Ward and joins forces with the former Rebels on Adelphi Base. Zeb Orrelios—first seen briefly in Season 3—plays a major role this time, with Favreau calling him a compelling character even for viewers unfamiliar with Rebels.

A Larger Story, But Still About Din and Grogu

Despite the wider mission and bigger stakes, Favreau says the core remains the bond between Din and Grogu. As the first Star Wars film since 2019’s The Rise of Skywalker, the story keeps the focus on their relationship as they face new dangers together. Favreau notes that the film continues the franchise’s themes of growth and apprenticeship, with more development ahead for both characters.

The Big-Screen Adventure Ahead

With the fall of the Empire still affecting the galaxy, Din Djarin and Grogu step into their most significant mission yet—one designed for IMAX and built to launch the next phase of Star Wars storytelling. Favreau promises progression, evolution, and a story driven by the clan of two as they take their place on the big screen.
