James Gunn lets loose an official first look at the Lanterns series, which is now filming, with an image of Kyle Chandler as Hal Jordan and Aaron Pierre as John Stewart.
“Excited that #Lanterns is now in production. DC Studios’ new show for @HBO and Max, from creators Chris Mundy, Damon Lindelof, & @TomKingTK, starring Kyle Chandler & Aaron Pierre, is something really special,” tweeted Gunn.
“From the start, our driving force has been to deliver a layered drama – rooted in nuanced storytelling and rich world building – that balances tension and mystery with honest, authentic emotion,” Mundy said. “The goal is to create something that feels timeless and grounded without sacrificing the magic of the source material.”
While they are not pictured in their Green Lantern suits, we can see that Chandler is indeed wearing the Green Lantern ring.

Why aren’t they wearing their Green Lantern suits?
The reason they’re not wearing their suits – and they’re not in space – is because Green Lanterns Hal Jordan and John Stewart are on Earth investigating a mystery death in the heartland of America. The official synopsis teases:
The series follows new recruit John Stewart and Lantern legend Hal Jordan, two intergalactic cops drawn into a dark, earth-based mystery as they investigate a murder in the American heartland.
Very grounded series
Gunn talked about the series recently in October at the NYCC.
“Chris, Damon, and Tom have put this thing together. It’s another project that’s been blessed from the beginning,” explained Gunn. “It’s something when we first started the DCU, in the first couple weeks of heading this up, we got together with a group of of writers, and Tom King was one of those writers.”
Gunn continued, “And we were in this room, and we came up with sort of this concept for Lanterns, and then we got Chris and Damon involved, and it just kind of has come out very easily, very naturally, it’s a much more — it’s a very grounded series, a very real series which is strange to say in a Green Lantern show but it’s going to be something like nobody’s ever seen before, and I can’t wait for people to catch it on HBO when it comes out.”
Who stars?
Also starring includes Kelly Macdonald as Sheriff Kerry, Garret Dillahunt as modern cowboy William Macon, Poorna Jagannathan as Zoe, with Ulrich Thomsen as Sinestro.
