No Joke: James Gunn’s ‘Superman’ Will Be At ‘Puppy Bowl’

Yep, you read that headline correct, James Gunn’s Superman will be at The Puppy Bowl – not the Super Bowl – on Sunday, February 9th.

According to THR, Warner Bros. Discovery is using its Puppy Bowl to give Gunn’s Superman a “major marketing push.” Recall how Gunn is so into animals, and of course, Krypto was the best thing about the recent Superman trailer. THR says:

Gunn will appear during The Puppy Bowl with his dog Ozu, who served as the inspiration for the superdog Krypto in the film. Gunn will introduce a sneak preview of Superman and deliver a “special message” to viewers.

No Superman Super Bowl trailer

So it seems likely that Warner Bros. is skipping out on promoting Superman at the Super Bowl. It’s been known that WB usually skips out on spending the dough for Super Bowl trailers, so no Superman Super Bowl trailer should come as no surprise. However, instead you have the Superman Puppy Bowl trailer to look forward to.

Gunn also skipped out on the Brazil Comic-Con and since Superman gets released July 11th that likely means Superman won’t be at this summer’s San Diego Comic Con but at least maybe Gunn and the DCU will still be there in some form.

What is The Puppy Bowl?

Assuming you care, Warner Bros. Discovery is holding Puppy Bowl XXI on Sunday, February 9th at 2P ET/11A PT on Animal Planet.

The event consists of puppies Playing “Football” (seriously) and serves as a lighthearted and entertaining alternative to the actual Super Bowl.

The Puppy Bowl is an annual television program featuring adorable puppies in a playful, football-themed setting. The “game” consists of puppies running around a small field decorated like a football stadium, chasing toys and each other. Touchdowns are scored when a puppy carries a toy into the end zone.

As part of the James Gunn Superman promotion:

One pup participating in the game will be awarded the “Krypto Super Play” award.

All puppies featured are typically from shelters and rescue organizations, promoting animal adoption (Gunn’s dog is a rescue dog, I believe). A human “referee” provides humorous commentary and calls penalties for “ruff play.” The event also features a commentator team to add excitement and narrative to the action.

The puppies are divided into two teams, such as Team Ruff and Team Fluff, competing for the coveted “Lombarky Trophy.” Other animals like kittens (in the “Kitty Halftime Show”), birds, or even baby animals might make appearances as part of the fun.

You can also vote for your favorite puppy on the official website.
