Disney Pixar’s Inside Out 2 is looking like it will have the biggest opening of the year with estimates now offering $140-$145 million or more (from a previous $120M-130M+). It’s higher. Check out the updates below.
The news comes at a much needed time within the movie business as not one film has opened to $100 million in 2024.
Dune: Part Two currently holds the biggest opening with $82.5 million.
Inside Out 2 scored great Thursday preview numbers with $13 million and is on track for a $60 million Friday box office (which includes Thursday previews).
For a comparison Toy Story 4 released in 2019 did $12 million for its Thursday previews, $47 million for Friday, and went on to open to $120.9 million.
Inside Out 2 is also doing great internationally as it has brought in $22.3 million in its first two days of release in 31 markets.
Saturday update: Estimates are now offering a $140M-$150M opening, possibly becoming the second highest opening for an animated movie of all-time behind Incredibles 2 ($182.6M) and ahead of last year’s Super Mario Bros Movie ($146.3M). Inside Out 2 actually did $62M on Friday (includes $13M from Thursday). Add another $110M from foreign gross and the flick is opening to $250M+ worldwide.
Monday update: Inside Out 2 scores the second-best opening all time for an animated movie with $155 million; add another $140M from foreign gross, and the worldwide box office is currently at $295M.
It’s also learned AMC theaters posted its highest attendance and admissions revenue of any weekend in 2024, also thanks to fans coming out to see Bad Boys: Ride or Die.
Both the critics and the fans are also liking what they are seeing as the Rotten Tomatoes Score is at 92%, with the Audience Score at 96%. The first film released in 2015 has scores of 98 and 89, respectively.
The rest of the weekend box office looks like Bad Boys: Ride or Die at second with only a %50 drop, followed by Garfield, IF, The Watchers, and Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes. Furiosa fell off the Top 5 chart last week.

What is Inside Out 2 about?
The little voices inside Riley’s head know her inside and out—but next summer, everything changes when Disney and Pixar’s “Inside Out 2” introduces a new Emotion: Anxiety. According to director Kelsey Mann, the new character promises to stir things up within headquarters. “Anxiety, voiced by Maya Hawke, might be new to the crew, but she’s not really the type to take a back seat,” said Mann. “That makes a lot of sense if you think about it in terms of what goes on inside all our minds.” A trailer, poster and film stills are now available for what promises to be the feel-good (or feel-everything) film of Summer 2024.
Disney and Pixar’s “Inside Out 2” returns to the mind of newly minted teenager Riley just as headquarters is undergoing a sudden demolition to make room for something entirely unexpected: new Emotions! Joy, Sadness, Anger, Fear and Disgust, who’ve long been running a successful operation by all accounts, aren’t sure how to feel when Anxiety shows up. And it looks like she’s not alone. Maya Hawke lends her voice to Anxiety, alongside Amy Poehler as Joy, Phyllis Smith as Sadness, Lewis Black as Anger, Tony Hale as Fear, and Liza Lapira as Disgust. Directed by Kelsey Mann and produced by Mark Nielsen, “Inside Out 2” releases only in theaters Summer 2024.
