Henry Cavill Not Returning For 'The Witcher' Following Superman Exit

With Henry Cavill exiting the Superman role, some fans (actually hundreds of thousands) have put it forth that the actor should return to The Witcher, as Henry also departed the Netflix series, which was thought to be in part due to moving forward with DC on Man of Steel 2.

However, Superman with Henry Cavill isn’t going to happen as Wednesday saw the news that Henry Cavill will no longer play Superman because James Gunn is developing his own take on the character.

A return to The Witcher also isn’t happening as Variety reports they have confirmed that “The Witcher Season 4 is moving forward unchanged, meaning Liam Hemsworth will star as Geralt of Rivia.”

When Cavill announced he was done with The Witcher, Netflix quickly announce a replacement with Liam Hemsworth.

“My journey as Geralt of Rivia has been filled with both monsters and adventures, and alas, I will be laying down my medallion and my swords for Season 4,” said Cavill in a statement posted to Instagram at the time. “In my stead, the fantastic Mr. Liam Hemsworth will be taking up the mantle of the White Wolf.”

Cavill continued, “As with the greatest of literary characters, I pass the torch with reverence for the time spent embodying Geralt and enthusiasm to see Liam’s take on this most fascinating and nuanced of men. Liam, good sir, this character has such a wonderful depth to him, enjoy diving in and seeing what you can find.”

The Witcher Season 3 featuring Henry Cavill gets released in 2023.

Update: It’s announced Henry will be starring in Amazon’s Warhammer 40,000 live-action series.

Henry Cavill as Superman

What did Henry Cavill and James Gun say about Superman?

Regarding his exit from Superman, Cavill also made an announcement along with James Gunn.

“I have just had a meeting with James Gunn and Peter Safran and it’s sad news, everyone,” said Cavill. “I will, after all, not be returning as Superman. After being told by the studio to announce my return back in October, prior to their hire, this news isn’t the easiest, but that’s life.”

Cavill continued, “The changing of the guard is something that happens. I respect that. James and Peter [Safran] have a universe to build. I wish them and all involved with the new universe the best of luck, and the happiest of fortunes.”

Gunn tweeted, “Peter & I have a DC slate ready to go, which we couldn’t be more over the moon about; we’ll be able to share some exciting information about our first projects at the beginning of the new year. Among those on the slate is Superman. In the initial stages, our story will be focusing on an earlier part of Superman’s life, so the character will not be played by Henry Cavill. But we just had a great meeting with Henry and we’re big fans and we talked about a number of exciting possibilities to work together in the future.”

Variety also reveals new details about the James Gunn movie in that “Gunn’s script will focus on Superman’s life as a cub reporter in the fictional city of Metropolis. Audiences will encounter him meeting key characters, like colleague Lois Lane. Because Gunn’s Superman is younger, there was never a chance of Cavill playing the role.”
