I suppose with James Gunn directing scenes and with Benecio Del Toro involved as The Collector, not to mention the Guardians themselves, it was thought by some that the new Disney Guardians of the Galaxy: Mission Breakout ride was set within the MCU.
However, that’s not the case.
“It is distinctly meant to be its own universe,” Joe Rohde, a creative executive at Walt Disney Imagineering who helped create the ride, said, reports io9. “The universe will grow and expand and there are elements in there that will link to a dimensional universe. We really tried to not simply reflect on an existing narrative but to extend narrative and expand it.”
“It’s a whole new story,” Dave Bushore, VP of franchise creative and marketing at Marvel Studios, added. “The idea that you have the Collector and you have all these other characters that showed up in Vol. 1 and Vol. 2 and other portions of other films, and other things that go on across the Marvel Universe, it’s a whole story unto itself.”
Earlier today also saw IGN post images from the Guardians of the Galaxy: Mission Breakout ride which hinted at both Beta Ray Bill (Stormbreaker) and possibly Namor (Atlantis)–now we see they are more or less just Easter Eggs and not meant to include Beta Ray Bill or Namor in the MCU (see pics below).
“The idea that those Easter Eggs can be refreshed and renewed with all new stuff keeps the story fresh and new and keeps the story totally on its own,” Bushore said.
Guardians of the Galaxy: Mission Breakout opens Saturday at Disney California Adventure park.
