What is the Gargoyles animated series?

Gargoyles was created by Greg Weisman, who was also behind the popular Young Justice animated series.

A new comic book recently launched at Dynamite Comics.

The series aired for three seasons from 1994-1997, with all three seasons available to watch on Disney+.

The show was produced by Walt Disney Television Animation and was part of Disney’s syndicated programming block called The Disney Afternoon.

Gargoyles is known for its complex and dark storytelling, which distinguishes it from typical children’s animated shows, as well as its Shakespearean themes.

The series follows a group of gargoyles, nocturnal creatures that turn to stone during the day, who awaken in modern-day New York City after being cursed and frozen in stone for a thousand years.

“In Scotland, 994 A.D. Goliath and his clan of gargoyles defend a medieval castle. In present day, David Xanatos buys the castle and moves it to New York City. When the castle is attacked the gargoyles are awakened from a 1000 year curse,” states the Disney+ description.

The gargoyles are led by Goliath (voiced by Keith David), a strong and wise gargoyle, and they struggle to adapt to the contemporary world while facing various villains and supernatural threats.

The series also features the voice talents of Salli Richardson (Elisa), Jeff Bennett, Bill Fagerbakke (Brooklyn), Thom Adcox-Hernandez (Lexington), Ed Asner (Hudson), Frank Welker (Bronx), and Bridgitte Bako (Angela), with Star Trek‘s Marina Sirtis (Demona) and Jonathan Frakes (David Xanatos).
