Marvel COSMIC Universe director James Gunn took to Twitter earlier to answer a few fans questions, which included the release date for Guardians of the Galaxy 3 and whether or not he will use any of the Bendis Guardians characters.
Some other interesting information from the Twitter Q&A includes James Gunn commenting on if the Disney purchase of Fox Studios will impact Guardians of the Galaxy 3 and if Yondu will ever come back.
Regarding the latter, I have to give James Gunn major credit for killing off Michael Rooker’s Yondu in Guardians of the Galaxy 2, as an MCU film has never previously killed off a major character. It was good to see Gunn include ramifications in his films, while a majority of the other Marvel movies are more or less “popcorn” flicks.
On resurrecting Yondu, Gunn said: “SPOILER. He will never be brought back to life as long as I’m around. His passing needs to mean something.”

Now on the topic of Disney purchasing Fox Studios – which means the X-Men and Fantastic Four film rights will now be at Marvel – Gunn says that it won’t be changing the story to Guardians of the Galaxy 3.

While you think that might mean James Gunn won’t be using any Fox Studios Marvel characters in Guardians of the Galaxy 3, that might not be entirely true. To be clear, we don’t know if Gunn is using any Fox Marvel characters, but James Gunn did use Ego the Living Planet for Guardians of the Galaxy 2, which was owned by Fox Studios at the time.
Marvel Studios and Fox Studios came to a mutual agreement about Marvel using Ego in Guardians of the Galaxy 2 and Fox using Negasonic Warhead in Deadpool, so there could always another similar type arrangement between the two companies for Guardians of the Galaxy 3 if James Gunn wants to go that route and plans on using Fox characters.
Regardless if James Gunn isn’t using Fox characters for Guardians of the Galaxy 3, the good news is that the characters will be back at Marvel and James Gunn (or whoever) can then use them. Gunn has expressed interest in using both the Silver Surfer and Annihilus, two characters which fall under the Fantastic Four film rights. Perhaps we’ll see them in the MCU following Guardians of the Galaxy 3, or maybe sooner? There is speculation about Silver Surfer for Avengers 4.
