Prime Video Orders ‘Fourth Wing’ To Series

Prime Video has officially ordered Fourth Wing to series.

The announcement was made Monday during Amazon’s upfront presentation in New York City, with Prime Video confirming the Rebecca Yarros romantasy hit is moving forward as a TV series.

Meredith Averill, known for The Haunting of Hill House and Locke & Key, is adapting the novel for television and will serve as showrunner and executive producer. Lisa Joy, co-creator of Westworld and co-founder of Kilter Films, will direct the pilot.

Fourth Wing Gets Series Order At Prime Video

Fourth Wing will stream exclusively on Prime Video in more than 240 countries and territories worldwide.

The series comes from Amazon MGM Studios and is based on Yarros’ bestselling fantasy novel, which has become a major hit with readers and helped fuel the current romantasy boom.

Prime Video announced the news during its May 11 upfront presentation, where the streamer also spotlighted several major upcoming projects.

What Is Fourth Wing About?

Fourth Wing follows Violet Sorrengail, a young woman who expects to live a quiet life among books and history as a scribe.

Her plans are shattered when her mother, a commanding general, forces her to enter Basgiath War College, where candidates train to become dragon riders.

The problem is Violet is smaller and physically weaker than many of the other riders-in-training, and the deadly college doesn’t make room for weakness. The dragons don’t bond with everyone, and many students die before graduation.

Violet must survive ruthless classmates, brutal training, political secrets, and a dangerous attraction while trying to prove she belongs among the elite riders of Navarre.

Violet Sorrengail Enters Basgiath War College

Prime Video’s official description says Violet is forced by her mother into “the brutal world of Basgiath War College.”

There, she joins hundreds of candidates competing to become dragon riders, the elite warriors of Navarre.

The story mixes fantasy, romance, danger, dragon lore, military training, and political intrigue, with Violet at the center of a world where survival is never guaranteed.

Rebecca Yarros Executive Producing

Rebecca Yarros will executive produce the Fourth Wing series.

“I’m thrilled to be working with this dedicated, experienced team and grateful for their passion for both the books and the readership behind them,” Yarros said.

The author’s involvement should help reassure fans hoping the adaptation stays close to the tone, characters, and emotional stakes of the book.

Lisa Joy To Direct The Pilot

Lisa Joy is set to direct the pilot and will executive produce through Kilter Films.

Jonathan Nolan, Lisa Joy, and Athena Wickham executive produce via Kilter Films. Michael B. Jordan and Elizabeth Raposo executive produce through Outlier Society. Liz Pelletier and Sherryl Clark executive produce via Premeditated Productions.

Meredith Averill will serve as showrunner and executive producer.

Prime Video Calls Fourth Wing A Global Phenomenon

Peter Friedlander, Head of Global Television at Amazon MGM Studios, said Fourth Wing has already built a major fanbase.

“Violet’s journey in Fourth Wing has sparked a global phenomenon, captivating millions of readers and building an intensely passionate fanbase around its world, characters, and emotional stakes,” Friedlander said. “Rebecca Yarros’ brilliant series is one of the most anticipated adaptations in the world, and with Meredith and our valued partners at Kilter, Outlier, and Premeditated, we’re bringing it to life in a way that honors what fans love about the story.”

No Premiere Date Yet

Prime Video has not announced a premiere date or casting for Fourth Wing.

The project now has a series order, a showrunner, and Lisa Joy attached to direct the pilot, meaning the adaptation has taken a major step forward.
