The Office gets another reboot over in Australia courtesy Amazon Prime Video, but the fan reaction isn’t good as the trailer has 72k dislikes.
This latest version of The Office is a new take on the original Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant classic that first aired in the UK and then became super famous with the U.S. version led by Steve Carell.
This new Australian version has Aussie variants of the originals, David, Tim, Dawn, Gareth etc. and variants of the U.S. version, Michael, Pam, Jim, Dwight etc.
There’s actually been over a dozen versions of The Office that have aired in various countries, so it’s not like this is supposed to be replacing any other version. The characters are actually supposed to be similar to and variants of the more well known versions (I think that’s right).
Following the recent U.S. version, I also believe this Aussie version happens to be getting the biggest release. It’s having worldwide release on Prime Video in 240 countries and territories worldwide which started on Oct. 18 — that is, everywhere but the U.S. (use a VPN).
The U.S. version has a new version of The Office underway (described as set in a dying historic Midwestern newspaper and the publisher is trying to revive it with volunteer reporters).
What do the comments say about The Office?
Prime Video released the trailer about a month ago (watch below), it hit Reddit and got zero upvotes, and fans have destroyed it in the comments on YouTube. A handful of reviews have also hit Rotten Tomatoes where fans presently give it a 32%.
