Ethan Van Sciver Says He Spoiled HBO’s Lanterns Sinestro Twist

Former DC Comics artist Ethan Van Sciver is adding more fuel to the Lanterns talk after reacting to a new report about the HBO series’ villain.

Van Sciver posted on X, “Oh hell yeah. I just spoiled the entire LANTERNS show,” in response to a report about the series’ “secret” main villain.

The report tied the villain reveal back to Van Sciver’s earlier comments, claiming that Thaal Sinestro appears in every episode of the upcoming show.

Van Sciver may have confirmed more than intended

Van Sciver had already raised eyebrows when he previously said, “Sinestro is in every single episode of this show BTW,” while also arguing that DC Studios was deliberately holding back major Green Lantern material from the teaser.

Now, with Van Sciver stating that he “spoiled the entire LANTERNS show,” fans are taking it as him basically admitting he may have let a major detail slip before DC and HBO were ready to reveal it.

Van Sciver had already been defending the series

What made Van Sciver’s earlier comments stand out is that he wasn’t trashing the series.

He actually praised the teaser, thanked James Gunn, said the cast looked solid, and argued that the show was being approached as an adult drama-mystery first and a superhero story second.

Worth pointing out is that Van Sciver also co-created the Green Lantern characters, Atrocitus and Jessica Cruz, with the former rumored for the series.

Release

Lanterns stars Kyle Chandler as Hal Jordan and Aaron Pierre as John Stewart, with Ulrich Thomsen previously reported to be playing Sinestro.

The HBO and DC Studios series is set to debut later in August 2026 on HBO and HBO Max.
