Doctor Who is getting a new streaming home in the U.S., with AMC+ landing the exclusive rights to the modern run of the long-running BBC sci-fi series.
AMC+ announced that 13 seasons and 176 episodes of Doctor Who, including specials, will be available to stream beginning Thursday, June 11.
The deal covers the 2005–2022 run of the series, featuring Christopher Eccleston, David Tennant, Matt Smith, Peter Capaldi, and Jodie Whittaker as the Doctor.
Doctor Who Moves To AMC+
The move gives Doctor Who fans access to the modern era of the series, starting with the 2005 revival and running through Jodie Whittaker’s final episodes.
The AMC+ launch also comes during the 20th anniversary year of Doctor Who’s U.S. premiere. The series follows the Doctor, a regenerating Time Lord who travels across time and space in the TARDIS.
AMC+ is also using the launch to push a limited-time subscription offer. The streamer is offering a one-year subscription for $29.99 through May 25.
AMC+ Adds A Major Genre Franchise
AMC says Doctor Who fits with its growing focus on genre shows and fandom-driven franchises.
“Doctor Who strengthens AMC+’s position as a destination for premium genre storytelling – curated franchises defined by iconic worlds, passionate fan bases and enduring cultural impact,” said Courtney Thomasma, Executive Vice President of AMC Global Media’s linear and streaming products.
Thomasma added that AMC+ is “thrilled to welcome the Whoniverse” and said the move gives longtime fans a reason to return while introducing new viewers to the franchise.
BBC Studios also praised the move.
“Doctor Who is one of the most beloved franchises in television, with a fanbase that spans generations,” said Lawrence Szabo, EVP of Content Sales, North America & LatAm, BBC Studios.
Szabo said AMC+ is an ideal streaming partner for the 13 seasons because of its focus on premium genre franchises and dedicated fandoms.
Which Doctors Are Included?
The AMC+ deal includes the modern Doctor Who run from 2005 through 2022.
The Doctors featured in those seasons include:
- Christopher Eccleston
- David Tennant
- Matt Smith
- Peter Capaldi
- Jodie Whittaker
The run includes some of the most popular eras of the modern series, including Tennant’s fan-favorite stint, Smith’s breakout U.S. popularity, and Capaldi’s darker take. Whittaker’s run as the first female Doctor is also featured.
Doctor Who Joins The Walking Dead And Anne Rice On AMC+
Doctor Who now joins AMC+’s growing lineup of genre franchises.
The streamer already has The Walking Dead Universe and The Anne Rice Universe, which includes Interview with the Vampire, Mayfair Witches, and the upcoming The Vampire Lestat.
AMC+ also has shows such as Mad Men, Preacher, Orphan Black, A Discovery of Witches, Wynonna Earp, Snowpiercer, The Terror, Chucky, Creepshow, Tales from the Crypt, and more.
The Doctor Who pickup gives AMC+ another recognizable sci-fi brand with a built-in fanbase, which should help the streamer stand out as competition remains packed.
Doctor Who Returns To U.S. Streaming June 11
Doctor Who originally returned to TV in 2005 and has since become one of the biggest modern sci-fi franchises, earning multiple BAFTA Awards and a Peabody Award.
The 2005–2022 run was produced by BBC Studios for BBC iPlayer and BBC One, with BBC America as co-producer. BBC Studios handles international distribution.
The 13-season Doctor Who library begins streaming exclusively in the U.S. on AMC+ on Thursday, June 11.
