No Doctor Strange 2?
Marvel Studios debuted the Doctor Strange movie back in 2016 and introduced Benedict Cumberbatch as the would-be MCU Sorcerer Supreme. The film was well received, with the box office netting over $600 million, so it was pretty much assumed there would be a sequel.
Not so fast says Benedict Cumberbatch while promoting The Avengers: Infinity War.
“I know the latest is that I might not make it out of this film alive,” he told Radio Times. “It said at the end of the first film, if I’m right, that Doctor Strange will be back. I have been back in Thor: Ragnarok and obviously in this film. So there’s nothing to say either contractually or otherwise that he’s coming back again.”
Doctor Strange getting killed off in Infinity War would be a huge surprise. Would Marvel Studios make one Doctor Strange movie only to have the character killed off as cannon fodder for Thanos and the Black Order?
That’s a topic that actually came up when the first Guardians of the Galaxy movie was announced. I actually chatted with someone who worked on the 2008 Guardians of the Galaxy comic (when it was around) that thought the Guardians would be cannon fodder for Thanos. I think a lot of fans are simply guessing that characters like Captain America are getting killed off because their contracts are up, but maybe we should all prepare ourselves with the possibility that other Avengers could get killed off as well?
On the topic of Doctor Strange 2, it was said back in April 2017 that Scott Derrickson would be back for the sequel.
Scott Derrickson also stated he does have ideas.
“So I have definite ideas, I think in the big picture of what would make the best possible Doctor Strange sequel. I hope it happens,” he said.
Benedict Cumberbatch also previously teased what he wants to se in Doctor Strange 2.
“I’m excited to see where the Illuminati and whatever else might happen, how that works, and where it ends up,” Cumberbatch said.
The Avengers: Infinity War opens April 27.
