Disney+ Gains 800K Subscribers In U.S. and Canada

Elon Musk’s X is currently celebrating Disney+’s loss of 700k subscribers, but as they say, the devil is in the details.

If you actually look at Disney’s quarterly earnings report for its first fiscal quarter ending Dec. 28, 2024, you will discover that Disney+ gained 800K subscribers in the U.S. and Canada.

The loss comes from international markets. Disney’s average revenue per subscriber also went up. Hulu also gained subscribers. In total, Disney+ and Hulu gained nearly a million subscribers.

The start of the earnings report does say, “125 million Disney+ subscribers, a decrease of 0.7 million vs. Q4 fiscal 2024,” but the line prior to that says, “178 million Disney+ and Hulu subscriptions, an increase of 0.9 million vs. Q4 fiscal 2024.”

Worth a mention is that Deadpool & Wolverine was released on Disney+ on Tuesday, November 12, 2024, which could have had something to do with the bump in North American subscribers. Inside Out 2 was also released on September 25, 2024, three days before the start of quarter one.

The Marvels confirmed a failure again

If you want something to celebrate, the report further confirms how much of a failure both The Marvels and Wish were in 2023, and if you add Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, it’s nearly a $400 million loss:

The improvement in operating results was due to higher theatrical distribution results reflecting the strong performance of Moana 2 in the current quarter. The current quarter also included Mufasa: The Lion King and the prior-year quarter included The Marvels and Wish.
