In emails sent out in October and November, the Hro Team announced they are shutting down their DC NFT hybrid card collection.
Led by Cartamundi Group, the DC NFT hybrid cards were launched in 2022. They’re physical cards that can be scanned which are then recorded on the blockchain, so you own both the physical and digital versions of the cards. Both then can be collected and sold.
DC and Hro deal is ending
According to the emails (see below), the deal between DC and Hro was for three years, which ends on January 31, 2025. They don’t give a specific reason for shutting down as they note, “A decision was made not to renew for strategic reasons.”
Obviously, we can guess if they are shutting down, the DC NFT hybrid cards weren’t a success. Worth a mention is that the crypto NFT space has been decimated, with most NFT’s losing nearly all their value. Bitcoin is about to hit a 100k, so the bull run seems to be back, but again, the NFT space as of now is severely down and it’s unknown if it will return.
Disappointing news
The Hro DC NFT hybrid cards are actually pretty cool, so this is disappointing, especially to collectors.
The card art is top-notch and the HRO app is pretty cool. I’ll say eBay’s policy on selling NFTs probably didn’t help. I tried selling physical boxes and was flagged for selling digital NFTS and my listings were removed. That said, I met the Hro team at Comic-Con a couple of years ago and the dude that started them. Great bunch of people, so it sucks they are shutting down.
What happens to your DC NFTs?
Regarding what happens to your digital assets, the NFTs, according to the e-mails, they can be moved to another platform; however, it sounds as if the Hro app and platform will eventually be shut down.
“Your digital collectibles can be withdrawn from the Hro platform and moved to the Immutable X platform under Hro’s current Terms of Use up until January 31, 2025,” states the e-mail (see below). “In the event you decide not to withdraw your cards in the manner described above, we anticipate that your cards will be migrated to the Kolex core platform by March 31, 2025.”
The e-mail continues, “The platform for DC Cards by Hro will be fully operational throughout the end of this season. After January 31, 2025, certain features and functionalities will be disabled, such as: Hro quests, Hro Reward points, the Hro Rewards Program, crafting, burning, and the global leaderboards. We are working on our transition, and will share further details when we have them.”
The e-mail adds, “The Hro Rewards program will be discontinued once the End of Season snapshot has taken place on January 31st at 10:00 a.m. PT (Blog: Season 2024 Rewards Artwork). This means Hro Points will no longer accrue, and your Hro Points balance will be zeroed out after this date. Make sure you use them up before this date!”
The email also states that “user’s cash balance will will be available on the Hro platform until January 31, 2025.”
What happens to unscanned DC Hro NFT cards?
Now regarding what happens to cards that haven’t been scanned, I’m not sure, and have reached out. I’ll update when I get a reply. Maybe the Kolex core platform takes over.

More details about migration for unscanned Hybrid cards are still waiting to be announced, and that question will be addressed when the information is released.

The emails also note they are releasing two more collections along with surprises before they shut down.
“This means that we have two more collections to launch, one hybrid (“Batman 85 Years”) and one digital (“DC Showcase: Batman”), as well as some farewell surprises that will be revealed in the coming weeks, and then we’ll reach the end of our DC Cards by Hro adventure,” states the e-mail.

As we get closer to our adventure’s end, we wanted to update you on what happens to your collection after January 31, 2025.
Your digital collection was built on blockchain technology. Your digital collectibles can be withdrawn from the Hro platform and moved to the Immutable X platform under Hro’s current Terms of Use up until January 31, 2025. To do this, visit your collection library, select the collection in which your card is located, open the card detail view page and then click ‘withdraw to Immutable X’ on the right side of the page.
Withdrawing your cards is recommended to ensure constant, unfettered access to your collection. You have the choice of whether or not to withdraw your cards. For more details about withdrawing your collection, visit our previous post here. Bulk exporting is not available.
In the event you decide not to withdraw your cards in the manner described above, we anticipate that your cards will be migrated to the Kolex core platform by March 31, 2025. Please note that you will need to agree to these Terms of Use as well as register with Kolex and accept their terms and conditions (subject to future updates) in order to continue accessing your collection.

DC Cards by Hro launched in 2022, and the excitement propelled the brand into a three-year collecting adventure that was shaped by your voices. Together, we have paved the way for hybrid trading card collecting. Now, as we begin to wind down the third season of DC Cards by Hro, we have come to the strategic decision that this season will be our last.
You may have some questions about what this means for your collection. We are actively working on a transition plan and have included FAQs below which should answer most of them. We will also share further details as we have them.
This means that we have two more collections to launch, one hybrid (“Batman 85 Years”) and one digital (“DC Showcase: Batman”), as well as some farewell surprises that will be revealed in the coming weeks, and then we’ll reach the end of our DC Cards by Hro adventure.
The two Batman-themed collections will take us back to where our journey with you started. Chapter 1, our debut hybrid trading cards collection, was themed after the Caped Crusader. We’re looking forward to ending this great adventure with you right where our journey began… in Gotham City. Pre-sale for our final hybrid collection begins on October 15, 2024, and the launch for our final digital collection will be announced in the coming weeks.

- Pre-sale for our final hybrid collection, “Batman 85 Years”, will be available on October 15, 2024 at 9:00 a.m. PDT. 500 units of a special early Hro pre-order bundle will be made available alongside the pre-sale, and will include a hybrid Mythic-tier card featuring Robin. The collection will launch on October 29, 2024.
