Christopher Nolan Didn’t Refer To Batman Comic Books: “source material is irrelevant”

Previously, Christopher Nolan stated that he wouldn’t do a fourth Batman film and also how much he disliked digital filmmaking.

Now Nolan states that he didn’t refer to the Batman comic books for his The Dark Knight Trilogy and even calls the source material “irrelevant.”

Nolan says he did not refer to the Batman comics, and never found the origin story of the characters all in one place in any case. He focused on just telling the best story he could. If he was influenced, it was by earlier Batman movies, some of which he found fanciful. He wanted his movies to be much more grounded in a kind of reality.

“The source material is irrelevant,” says Nolan. “The challenge with Batman is to find what is a believable character. You put your stamp on it.”

Still, he was always keenly aware that Batman is an iconic figure and a “classic brand.”

Now what Nolan says may seem rather harsh to comic book fans, because I swear some of the Batman comics are very very similar to his movies, but Nolan may mean that his work wasn’t directly influenced by the comics, meaning he did not follow them to the letter. And that they wouldn’t change the story he wanted to tell.

However, as there were mainly producers present at the Produced By Conference, most likely not many were comic book readers.

The Dark Knight Rises hits theaters July 20th, 2012 and is directed by Christopher Nolan starring Christian Bale as Batman, Tom Hardy as Bane, Anne Hathaway as Selina Kyle/Catwoman, Gary Oldman as Commissioner Gordon, Morgan Freeman as Lucius Fox, Michael Cain as Alfred, Juno Temple and Josh Pence as a young Ra’s al Ghul.
