Captain Marvel Villain Revealed: Ben Mendelsohn As A Skrull

The Captain Marvel villain stands revealed as the first images from the movie have been released featuring Ben Mendelsohn as the leader of the alien shapeshifting race of reptilian creatures known as the Skrulls.

Ben Mendelsohn will play two parts, one as the leader of the Skrulls, Talos, and the other, in the disguise of an undercover human working within S.H.I.E.L.D.

EW.com offered the following details:

The film also introduces one of Marvel comics’ nastiest and most notorious baddies: the Skrulls. Ben Mendelsohn plays their leader, Talos, seen here in all his bright-green glory. But he’s got another face, too

As any Marvel comics fan knows, the Skrulls are especially dangerous because of their unparalleled ability to shape-shift. On Earth, Mendelsohn’s Talos goes undercover as a human working within S.H.I.E.L.D. (seen here with directors Fleck and Boden). “It’s not easy being green,” Mendelsohn quips.

What is also known about the Skrulls in the Captain Marvel movie is that they are at war with their long time nemesis, the Kree, as both races are in the middle of a galactic war with each other, while the Earth is caught in the middle, which is what brings Carol Danvers into the equation.

The movie starts off with Brie Larson already a part of the Kree military, and then from there we can guess delves into the Skrulls infiltrating mankind, but to what end is presently a mystery.

What is rather interseting is that this is the first we have heard of the Skrulls in the ten years of the MCU, so how they explain not only the abscence of the Skrulls – but Captain Marvel as well – remains to be seen (worth a note is that Marvel Studios shares the film rights to the Skrulls with Fox Studios, but Fox owned characters such as Super Skrull).

We can also add that apparently SHIELD doesn’t have a great track record of being a secure organization as Captain America: The Winter Soldier saw it revealed HYDRA had also infiltrated the secret organization; I wonder if HYDRA will somehow factor into Captain Marvel?

Fans of Infinity War are also probably wondering how Captain Marvel fits into The Avengers 4 as Brie Larson is confirmed for the sequel. The Infinity War post-credit scene did reveal Nick Fury “paging” Carol Danvers, but why did he wait until then? Why not request her help during the Battle of New York during the first The Avengers movie? Or how about versus Ultron in Avengers 2? Lots of questions need to be answered, and I am sure Kevin Feige and company have thought of them all.

Captain Marvel

Captain Marvel has a  March 8, 2019 release directed by the writing/directing team of Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck and stars Academy Award winner Brie Larson, Samuel L. Jackson, Ben Mendelsohn, Djimon Hounsou, Lee Pace, Lashana Lynch, Gemma Chan, Algenis Perez Soto, Rune Temte, McKenna Grace, with Clark Gregg, and Jude Law.

Captain Marvel follows Carol Danvers as she becomes one of the universe’s most powerful heroes when Earth is caught in the middle of a galactic war between two alien races. Set in the 1990s, the film is an all-new adventure from a previously unseen period in the history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
