No surprise here as it basically is a description of all the MCU movies, but the upcoming Captain Marvel movie is described as an action comedy.
What remains to be seen is if it will be on the goofier side like Guardians of the Galaxy and Thor: Ragnarok or more toward something like Black Panther on the right. Possibly something in between? It does have aliens and such, and we know Marvel Studios’ track record with that, so possibly leaning toward the left a la Ant-Man and not Doctor Strange?
Captain Marvel screenwriter Geneva Robertson-Dworet told EW.com new details about the Captain Marvel movie, which stars Brie Larson as Carol Danvers, where it’s mentioned the current script exists thanks in part to the new Tomb Raider movie.
“Captain Marvel has a very funny voice, and it’s more of an action-comedy, more like what we were talking about doing in the first draft I wrote for Tomb Raider…. [but] that tone survived in Captain Marvel,” Robertson-Dworet explains. “I love funny female characters, so as Tomb Raider got more serious, I got even more committed to the idea of Captain Marvel being hilarious.”
Geneva Robertson-Dworet goes on to defend the decision to make Captain Marvel a comedy by stating it’s in the source material in the comics.
“That’s not just me inventing that,” she continues. “Carol Danvers is one of the funniest comic book characters. She’s so sassy, she’s such a smartass, she won’t take sh— from anyone, and the comic books do an amazing job at capturing that voice, and it was important that the entire Captain Marvel creative team [kept to that].”
It’s also noted that they wanted to intentionally go in a different direction than what Warner Bros. and Patty Jenkins did with Gal Gadot and Wonder Woman.
“Certainly we were writing after Wonder Woman had come out. We already saw one example of what a superheroine looked like on screen,” Robertson-Dworet said. “So we wanted to carve our own path and make sure we weren’t retreading the same territory, and showing all facets of what women are capable of.”
Carol Danvers is further described as sassy and funny.
“I’m hoping that sassy, funny superhero [in the film] is something people haven’t seen before, and that they’re going to be excited to see in Carol Danvers,” Robertson-Dworet offered. “A lot of the great Captain Marvel comic books really broke ground with Carol Danvers’ voice, and that’s something we want to continue with the movie.”
Captain Marvel has a March 8, 2019 release directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck also starring Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury, Jude Law as Walter Lawson / Mar-Vell, DeWanda Wise in an unknown role, Ben Mendelsohn is said to play the villain, Skrull commander / leader, and Gemma Chan is reported to play Doctor Minerva, a Kree geneticist and spy.
A previously released description for Captain Marvel offered: The superhero film will be set in the 90s, and the Skrulls, alien shape-shifters, will be the primary antagonists. After encountering the Kree hero, Captain Marvel, Carol Danvers was accidently subjected to otherworldly radiation that transformed her into a superhuman warrior. Calling herself Ms. Marvel, she established herself as one of Marvel’s most powerful and prominent heroes as a sole heroine and as a member of the Avengers. Recently, she adopted the mantle of Captain Marvel for herself.
