Box Office: LEGO Batman, Fifty Shades, John Wick 2

The LEGO Batman Movie has taken the top spot at the box office, with Fifty Shades Darker coming in at second, and John Wick 2 at third.

The LEGO Batman Movie netted $55.635 million at the U.S. box office, which is below some industry estimates and the $60 million WB was hoping for. The movie has a 91% positive rating amongst critics at Rotten Tomatoes, with interestingly enough 88% of movie goers stating they liked it. The LEGO Batman Movie currently has a $92.635 million worldwide gross.

Fifty Shades Darker brought in almost $47 million in the U.S., which is almost $40 million less than the first movie, but it may have some staying power with Valentine’s Day here (or not). Fifty Shades Darker has a current worldwide gross of almost $147 million. The film has a measly 10% favorable rating with critics at Rotten Tomatoes, with 64% of audiences liking it.

Regarding John Wick 2, the movie performed strong at the box office bringing in a tad over $30 million in the U.S., which is over double the first film’s opening of $14.4 million. Rotten Tomatoes has it at 90% favorable amongst critics, with 93% of audiences stating they liked it.

I found John Wick 2 to be enjoyable, but not as good as the first. I think John Wick 2 got a bit of an increased budget, so they “Hollywood’d” it up with more special effects and action. While the first movie was at least believable, John Wick 2 is a bit over-the-top, which I wasn’t thrilled with. Don’t get me wrong, John Wick 2 is still a good movie, I just think that the first movie really raised the bar. You can read our review for John Wick 2 here.
