Blue Beetle Is ‘Next Craziest Anime’ Says Xolo Maridueña

Though the Blue Beetle movie was a massive flop, Xolo Maridueña is getting a second chance to play the DC superhero in a new animated series.

The actor will be returning as part of James Gunn’s DCU in a new anime and returns to the DCU along with a shortlist of actors and characters that includes John Cena’s Peacemaker, Viola Davis’ Amanda Waller, and more.

In a recent interview, Xolo Maridueña talked how excited he is about coming back for the role.

“But of course, brother, there’s only one Blue Beetle [laughter],” Maridueña told Hablemos de Cine.

He continued, “I’m so excited to get to continue the story of Jaime is an honor and I just can’t wait to see where the heck he goes. It’s still so early but I just know it’s about to be the next craziest anime.”

What is the Blue Beetle animated series about?

The Blue Beetle animated series was announced back in June. The details include Miguel Puga, known for The Casagrandes, The Looney Tunes Show, Futurama, The Fairly Oddparents, and The Loud House has been developing the project since early this year as showrunner and director along with Cristian Martinez (The Fosters, Good Movemement, Women of the Children) as the writer.

Director of the Blue Beetle movie, Angel Manuel Soto, and the writer, Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer, are attached as executive producers.

At the time it was unknown if Xolo Maridueña would be starring in the series. However, James Gunn previously confirmed Xolo Maridueña would be back as Blue Beetle, and it has since been confirmed Maridueña is voicing the character.

“The animated series will build on the movie, developed under DC Studios’ previous regime, but will divert from telling the same story,” a previous description stated. “Instead, the show will create its own story which, in success, could potentially lead to a return to the big screen for the giant blue bug portrayed by Xolo Maridueña.”

The Blue Beetle movie released in August 2023 brought in $130.7 million.
