Top 10 Comic Books For January 2015

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:19040:]]

Diamond has released estimates for January comic book sales where Marvel crushes DC Comics, with sales of Star Wars #1 as the main factor.

Marvel’s Star Wars #1 had 60 plus variant covers in addition to being added to various geek box crate subscriptions which gave it over 1 million sales.

More than likely the drop off for Star Wars #2 will be extensive.

Putting Star Wars aside, DC’s Batman is the #best seller coming in at #2, which has been consistent for the publisher amd usually takes the top spot.

DC only had one other title in the top ten with Justice League; Marvel finished with a total of seven comics, with Image Comics and Robert Kirkman’s The Walking Dead coming in at #10.

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:19035:]]

It was previously rumored that the Batman Vs. Superman trailer would be attached to Warner Bros.’s Jupiter Ascending, but now that doesn’t appear to be the case.

Jupiter Ascending premiered tonight with advanced screenings, and fans took to Twitter to state no Batman Vs. Superman trailer was shown.

To date, the only footage revealed is the leaked Batman Vs. Superman Comic-Con trailer.

It’s currently unknown when the Batman Vs. Superman trailer is set to debut, but with the film being about a year away, Zack Snyder will more than likely be releasing it some time in the next couple of months.

Perhaps the Batman Vs. Superman trailer will be attached to the April 3rd opening of Fast and Furious 7?

“Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” has a March 25, 2016 release starring Ben Affleck as Batman, Henry Cavill as Superman, Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman, Amy Adams as Lois Lane, Laurence Fishburne as Perry White, Diane Lane as Martha Kent, Jeremy Irons as Alfred, Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor, Ray Fisher as Cyborg with Callan Mulvey, Holly Hunter and Tao Okamoto in new character roles for the film. Geoff Johns Leaving Superman

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:19034:]]

Superman #38 just saw Geoff Johns give Superman a new costume and a new power, and now it’s learned the DC Comics Chief Creative Officer is leaving the series.

Johns posted on DCComics.com that Superman #39 will be his last, with the new creative team to be announced.

Check it out:

Superman #38 came out yesterday and JR and I wanted to say thank you, because the issue sold out!

I have to admit, it’s a little bittersweet, because not only is it our final chapter of the Ulysses storyline, it’s also the penultimate issue to my short run on the title with the great and amazing John Romita Jr., as issue #39 will be my last.

I’m incredibly honored to have been the lucky writer working alongside JR on his first-ever monthly book for DC Comics and I’m extremely proud of the work we’ve done, especially the final issue of the run which dives deeper into the fallout from Superman’s new power.

You’ll find out the next team on Superman very soon. As for what’s next for me in the comic world besides JUSTICE LEAGUE with the amazing and talented Jason Fabok, you’ll have to ask my longtime friend and collaborator, the great Gary Frank…

Until then, I also wanted to say thank you to everyone for watching #DCTV every week!

J.J. Abrams Talks New Star Wars Lightsaber: Star Trek 3 Still Set In Space

Fans of Star Wars nervous about the new lightsaber seen in the first Star Wars: The Force Awakens trailer may be relieved to hear what J.J. Abrams says in the above video.

It turns out that all the reactions to the lightsaber – whether it works or not – were already thought of by Abrams and the crew working on Star Wars. Abrams says it was funny to see everyone talking about it.

“It’s been the funniest thing to see the arguments that have developed over this thing,” Abrams said. “It was a sketch that became a whole thing. This was not done without a lot of conversation, and it’s fun to see people have the conversation that we had, but in reverse.”

Abrams also lets it be known that he will be onboard Episodes VIII and IX as an executive producer and stated Rian Johnson is at least directing Star Wars: Episode VIII.

J.J. Abrams was also asked about Star Trek 3 as the movie has a new co-writer on board with Simon Pegg. When the title “Star Trek 3” was brought up, Abrams dismissed the notion with a smile.

“I don’t know ‘Star Trek 3’ really, though,” Abrams said, insinuating it will instead have a subtitle.

It’s then brought up that an example for the title could be “Star Trek: Adventures In Space,” with J.J. Abrams stating, “That is actually a great title,” and looking directly into the camera.

When Robert Orci was still attached to direct Star Trek 3, previous story details he let be known for the movie included that it would be set in space as well as would be closest to the original series more than any of the other prior movies.

With Abrams confirming Star Trek 3 will be set in space, it seems at least they are sticking with that aspect.

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:19033:]]

“Star Wars: The Force Awakens” has a December 18, 2015 release directed by J.J. Abrams from a screenplay by Lawrence Kasdan and Abrams. Kathleen Kennedy, J.J. Abrams, and Bryan Burk are producing, and John Williams returns as the composer.

Actors John Boyega, Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, Oscar Isaac, Andy Serkis, Domhnall Gleeson, Max von Sydow, Lupita Nyong’o and Gwendoline Christie will join the original stars of the saga, Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill, Anthony Daniels, Peter Mayhew, and Kenny Baker in the new film.

As mentioned, Skye is an Inhuman with the other two being Raina and the blind Inhuman seen at the end of the mid-season finale.

“With the revelations surrounding Skye’s true identity in the Winter Finale, we knew we’d be introducing more Inhumans as our story progressed,” said Executive Producer and Marvel’s Head of Marvel Television, Jeph Loeb. “The charming energy Luke brings to the role will make him a character to watch as we continue our season.”

Spider-Man Back At Marvel? Amy Pascal Onboard As Producer

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:19029:]]

Amy Pascal has stepped down from being co-chairman of Sony Pictures Entertainment and chairman of the Motion Picture Group.

She’s leaving to be a part of a new Sony production venture, which will see Pascal produce new movies.

THR reports part of the deal is for Pascal to be onboard as producer on the new all-female Ghostbusters film as well as future Amazing Spider-Man movies. It’s also reported Matt Tolmach will serve as a Spider-Man producer after having left his position as Columbia Pictures president.

Regarding whether Spider-Man has returned to Marvel is unknown, but the the officially released press details are rather interesting.

Pascal released a statement which reads in part plans are set for the next two years, which more than likely includes plans for Spider-Man (note: bold below my own).

“I have spent almost my entire professional life at Sony Pictures and I am energized to be starting this new chapter based at the company I call home,” Pascal said in a statement. “I have always wanted to be a producer. [Sony Entertainment CEO] Michael [Lynton] and I have been talking about this transition for quite some time, and I am grateful to him for giving me the opportunity to pursue my long-held dream and for providing unparalleled support. As the slate for the next two years has come together, it felt like the right time to transition into this new role. I am so grateful to my team, some of whom I have worked with for the last 20 years and others who have joined more recently. I am leaving the studio in great hands. I am so proud of what we have all done together and I look forward to a whole lot more.”

It’s further reported that Sony “will finance Pascal’s venture and retain all distribution rights worldwide to the films.”

Previously leaked e-mails that revealed Sony and Marvel were in talks for Spider-Man mentioned Marvel wanted the creative rights with Sony keeping distribution rights.

However, what is unclear is whether Spider-Man is technically staying at Sony (with Pascal just on as producer), or if Spider-Man is moving to the new production wing under Pascal (and possibly Marvel).

The news of Amy Pascal coming onboard as producer follows reports that Sony was holding a Spider-Man summit in January. Leaked e-mails revealed that Pascal was undecided about Spider-Man returning to Marvel, with reports also stating Marvel wanted a new Spider-Man actor while Pascal wanted to keep Andrew Garfield.

It probably should be noted both Marvel and Sony recently denied rumors of Spider-Man returning to Marvel.

Sinister Six is supposed to be released next year, so more than likely announcements should be coming soon.

Sony Brazil Facebook also teased future plans for Spider-Man are underway as well as teasing Sinister Six.

NBC Announces Renewals: Constantine Not Listed

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:19028:]]

Today saw NBC announce season renewals for next year, and it’s sad to say Constantine isn’t among them.

NBC has renewed new seasons for The Blacklist (season 3), Chicago Fire (season 4), Chicago P.D. (season 3), Law & Order: Special Victims Unit (season 17) and Grimm (season 5) for the 2015-16 season.

It’s guessed NBC needs to decide if Constantine will get a second season rather quickly as the actors will need to set their schedules or obviously move on to other projects.

Ratings for Constantine have been up and down, with the DVR viewings being high; however, network executives stated the problem was with live viewership, insinuating it needs to be better to warrant further episodes.

It’s possible Constantine could see a network change, perhaps airing on SyFy, which is owned by NBC Universal as well.

Showrunner Daniel Cerone has been hopeful on Twitter for a second season.

Constantine airs on the same night as Grimm and recently moved to the preceding timeslot on Fridays at 8pm ET.
