Anthony Mackie responds to claims that Captain America: Brave New World underwent massive reshoots.
Redditors posted the following via Apple News, which I believe comes from the December issue of Empire Magazine:
The ping-ponging of the film’s release date, along with rumours of extensive reshoots and significant retooling of the movie in response to negative test-screening reactions, has led to suggestions that the film might be troubled. Something that its makers strongly deny. “It wasn’t retooled at all,” says Mackie. “Every Marvel movie I’ve done has done reshoots, so it’s not retooling or remaking. You basically get the movie and the story you want, you edit it together, then go back and shoot a few more scenes.”
Title changes and release date delays
Mackie’s claims that Captain America: Brave New World wasn’t retooled don’t exactly seem to hold up. For one, they changed the title from “New World Order” to “Brave New World,” which means the same thing (the deep state in today’s lingo), but they’re probably banking on most fans not realizing that.
Producer Nate Moore explains the reason behind the title change to Empire:
“I think ‘New World Order’ was a title we thought was really interesting, and sort of moody and scary, and to be quite honest, some of the feedback we got, internally and externally, was that that phrase has, unfortunately, been co-opted in the real world in a way that made people uncomfortable,”
Also, if things were all hunky dory, they would never have pushed the release date back by almost a year. Originally, “Captain America: New World Order” was already supposed to have been released on July 26, 2024. Sound familiar? Instead, it went to Deadpool & Wolverine which brought in over $1.3 billion.
At least four reshoots
Various reports have claimed that Captain America: Brave New World has undergone numerous reshoots which has led to a ballooning budget. Even Deadpool creator Rob Liefeld chimed in on X and said four reshoots. It’s also been said numerous times that test screenings haven’t been good, which is a reason for all the reshoots.
At the same time, reports say Mackie hasn’t been happy on set as all they did was wait around for pages of the script to be written. It’s been even said Julius Onah didn’t finish the reshoots, which lines up with how my insiders said a similar situation happened with Taika Waititi on Thor: Love and Thunder.
Word is getting out
We can also add that Anthony Mackie addressing the claims Captain America: Brave New World has problems means word is getting out and his response is obviously meant to calm down the fans. Worth a mention is that Mackie isn’t going to come out and sink the movie by stating it’s a mess. Typically what happens is years later, the actor or actors involved will reveal they had problems with the flick, which just happened this week with Amy Adams and Jesse Eisenberg regarding their DCEU experience.
Steve Rogers is Cap, Sam is Falcon
That said, if Captain America: Brave New World turns out to be a good movie and is a box office success, reports about the problems and the film being a disaster will be quickly forgotten. However, the message from fans seems clear: Steve Rogers is Cap, Sam Wilson is Falcon. Marvel just announced Chris Evans will be back for Avengers: Doomsday. MCU Captain America: Brave New World producer Nate Moore has also just been announced to be exiting Marvel two months prior to the film’s release.
Captain America: Brave New World opens February 14, 2025.
