Just as James Gunn’s Superman trailer and movie are underway, both Amy Adams and Jesse Eisenberg slam Batman vs. Superman and Justice League in separate unrelated interviews.
Of course, Amy Adams played Zack Snyder’s choice of Lois Lane in the DCEU, and Eisenberg was cast as Lex Luthor. The pair describe how bad of an experience they had with the movies.
Amy Adams thought she was done with acting
Adams recently reunited with her Arrival director, Denis Villeneuve, and revealed before she decided to do Arrival that she thought her career in acting was over. She doesn’t specifically mention Batman vs. Superman or Justice League by name, but it syncs up with what she says, as she filmed Arrival right after filming Justice League (I believe):
“When I first met you, I was just getting off of a film. It was a really hard experience and I was like, ‘I’m not reading anything. I don’t know if I’m working again.’ I was like, ‘Mm-hmm.’ And my very smart and thoughtful team said, ‘You can not read anything, but you have to read this first. So I was adamant. I’m like, ‘Great, I’ll read it.’ I got to the end of it. I was so moved, and then of course immediately had to read it again.
To put things in context, Zack Snyder filmed Justice League right after Batman vs. Superman. However, recall how Snyder had to depart the project, said due to a family emergency. Joss Whedon would come on board and finish Justice League after Adams filmed Arrival (I believe that is correct as Arrival was released in 2016, and Whedon filmed for three months in early 2017). Worth a mention is that Affleck said his experience on Justice League drove him to drinking.
Playing Lex hurt Eisenberg’s career “in a real way”
Regarding what Eisenberg said about playing Lex Luthor. He recently appeared on the Dax Shepard’s Armchair Expert podcast and said he thought playing Lex hurt his career:
“I was in this Batman movie and the Batman movie was so poorly received, and I was so poorly received. I’ve never said this before and it’s kind of embarrassing to admit, but I genuinely think it actually hurt my career in a real way, because I was poorly received in something so public.”.”
“I’ve been in poorly received things that just don’t see the light of day, and for the most part, no one knows. But this was so public, and I don’t read notices or reviews or movie press or anything, so I was unaware of how poorly it was received.”
James Gunn is now in charge of the DCU, and his Superman trailer reveals a first look at David Corenswet as the new Man of Steel, with Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor.
