George R.R. Martin’s Tournament Story

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms focuses on Ser Duncan the Tall and his young squire Egg, a century before Game of Thrones. The series takes place 72 years after House of the Dragon and 100 years before Game of Thrones, during a time when the Targaryens still rule but have lost their dragons.

George R.R. Martin, who wrote the Dunk and Egg novellas, said he wanted to center this story around a tournament, something he’d always wanted to fully explore on screen.

“We had tournaments in Game of Thrones, but they were background,” Martin said Thursday at the NYCC. “I wanted to do the best jousting sequences ever filmed. My favorite was Ivanhoe (1952).”

Showrunner Ira Parker added, “There’s a jousting scene at night, which is badass.”
