Avatar director James Cameron blasts DC and Marvel for not making movies the way he thinks they should be made.
Cameron, who has Avatar 2: The Way of the Woke coming out in December, spoke with the NY Times on Tuesday and called out both DC and Marvel for their superhero films.
“When I look at these big, spectacular films — I’m looking at you, Marvel and DC — it doesn’t matter how old the characters are, they all act like they’re in college,” he said. “They have relationships, but they really don’t. They never hang up their spurs because of their kids. The things that really ground us and give us power, love, and a purpose? Those characters don’t experience it, and I think that’s not the way to make movies.”
Cameron’s comments are interesting but do they hold any weight?
Regarding not having any relationships, part of being a hero or a villain is being broken; however, Hawkeye is married, Tony Stark has Pepper, Captain America eventually gets together with Peggy, true we haven’t seen Betty Banner in years, Superman has Lois, Spider-Man has Mary Jane, so there is that, Wonder Woman has Steve Trevor, too.
A true hero also wouldn’t “hang up their spurs” just because they have kids, right? Batman is still Batman when he’s watching over and training Robin and Damian. Superman even has sons in the TV show.
Who’s supposed to save the world? Only heroes with no kids? Tell that to the veterans, firefighters, and police officers of the world who often do what they do to protect their kids and families.
“With great power comes great responsibility.”
Talk about being clueless. Wow.
No power, love, and purpose?
They are comic book movies after all, so it’s not the Godfather we are talking about here (hello) but those scenes in Infinity War and Endgame dealing with retrieving the Soul Stone were definitely tear-jerkers.
Let me think?
Would I rather watch an entertaining action-packed comic book flick or get lectured to about white people being the bad guys, corporations being the bad guys, about environmental mumbo-jumbo and tree huggers? No thanks.
Francis Ford Coppola and Martin Scorsese say more of the same
Speaking of the Godfather, Deadline also points out both Francis Ford Coppola and Martin Scorsese blasted comic book flicks as well.
When’s the last time those two guys did anything original as movie after movie is just a remake of their preceding film? Ouch!
“I don’t see [Marvel films]. I tried, you know? But that’s not cinema,” Scorsese told Empire magazine back in 2019. “Honestly, the closest I can think of them, as well made as they are, with actors doing the best they can under the circumstances, is theme parks. It isn’t the cinema of human beings trying to convey emotional, psychological experiences to another human being.”
Coppola added in an appearance in France, “When Martin Scorsese says that the Marvel pictures are not cinema, he’s right, because we expect to learn something from cinema, we expect to gain something, some enlightenment, some knowledge, some inspiration. I don’t know that anyone gets anything out of seeing the same movie over and over again. Martin was kind when he said it’s not cinema. He didn’t say it’s despicable, which I just say it is.”
