In addition to The Batman getting a release date, Warner Bros. announces the James Gunn Suicide Squad movie will be released Aug. 6, 2021.
Details include the tentative title is The Suicide Squad and that it will be a relaunch featuring new characters, which was previously made known.
Michael Rooker also previously let it slip that not only is James Gunn writing the movie, but that Gunn will be directing, which is now confirmed.
I also recently posted about how Suicide Squad 2 is supposed to be similar to Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy, which is also confirmed, as THR notes, “Sources also say that the project is also very much rooted in Gunn’s vibe, as seen in the Guardians movies.”
James Gunn was fired by Disney last Summer from Marvel Studios and Guardians of the Galaxy 3 over tweets that resurfaced ten years ago joking about rape and pedophilia. While fans and even the Guardians actors backed James Gunn and wanted him to still direct Guardians of the Galaxy 3, Disney refused to rehire James Gunn. Shortly after, reports came out that Gunn was in talks with other studios, as they didn’t feel they were accountable to Disney’s strict “family values,” with it eventually learned Gunn had signed with Warner Bros. for the Suicide Squad sequel.
Regarding Gunn’s approach to Suicide Squad 2, it has been said to basically be Guardians of the Galaxy, but not in space, which is the approach Warner Bros. wanted to go with, and obviously something Gunn is alright with.
